After updating to 46.0, "open link in new tab" function will not work, and any new pages open are blank, so, how can I fix this, as Refresh did not work?

Firefox is pretty much unusable after 46.0 update. Back button always greyed out, open link in new tab option does not work, and pages which open are blank. Tried refresh (nothing happens when this is selected), system boot after firefox removal, and then reinstall. No malware on machine. Loaded Chrome si I can at least browse, works perfectly. Very frustrating, as I used to be a big fan.

Should be only one folder to delete (OldFirefox) if you want to delete it. What other folders were generated besides the new Mozilla Firefox folder?

Since Refresh didn't run, could you

Create a new Firefox profile

A new profile will have your system-installed plugins (e.g., Flash) and extensions (e.g., security suite toolbars), but no themes, other extensions, or other customizations. It also should have completely fresh settings databases and a fresh cache folder.

Exit Firefox and start up in the Profile Manager using Start > search box (or Run):

firefox.exe -P

Don't delete anything here!

Any time you want to switch profiles, exit Firefox and return to this dialog.

Click the Create Profile button, assign a name like May2016, and skip the option to relocate the profile folder. After creating the profile, select it and start Firefox in that profile.

Any difference?

If the new profile works, you can migrate data selectively from your old profile. This article describes the key files: Recover important data from an old profile.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode {web Link} by holding down the <Shift>
(Mac=Options)
key, and then starting Firefox. Is the problem still there?

This has no effect in resolving problem. Thanks anyways.

What method did you use to remove Firefox before reinstalling? Sometimes inexplicable breakage can be due to corruption or alien files in the program folder. This is what we generally recommend for that:

Clean Reinstall

We use this name, but it's not about removing your settings, it's about making sure the program files are clean (no inconsistent or alien code files). As described below, this process does not disturb your existing settings. Do NOT uninstall Firefox, that's not needed.

(A) Download a fresh installer for Firefox 46.0 from https://www.mozilla.org/firefox/all/ to a convenient location. (Scroll down to your preferred language.) For maximum plugin compatibility, choose the 32-bit version.

(B) Exit out of Firefox (if applicable).

(C) Rename the program folder as follows:

32-bit install on 64-bit Windows

C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox

to

C:\Program Files (x86)\OldFirefox

All other installations

C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox

to

C:\Program Files\OldFirefox

(D) Run the installer you downloaded in step (A). It should automatically connect to your existing settings.

Note: Some plugins may exist only in that OldFirefox folder. If something essential is missing, look in these folders:

  • \OldFirefox\Plugins
  • \OldFirefox\browser\plugins

No idea whether that will help, but you already tried most other things.

Didn't have any effect on how Firefox works, no change whatsoever. Now have a bunch of folders to delete. Thanks for the help.

This solution worked for me:

1. Restarted Firefox in Safe Mode by going to Help|Restart with Add-ons disabled. Firefox was working fine, which told me that there was a problem with one or more of my Add-ons.

2. Restarted Firefox with Add-ons enabled. The original problems were back.

3. Went to Tools|Add-ons to try to identify the problematic Add-on. Under "Extensions," I saw a warning that one of my Add-ons, RefreshBlocker, was incompatible with Firefox 46.0.

4. Disabled RefreshBlocker and restarted Firefox. Firefox worked fine after that.

So, I'd suggest that you do what I did and look for any Add-ons that say they are incompatible with Firefox 46.0, disable them and restart Firefox. If that doesn't fix the problem, go back to your Add-ons and disable them one-by-one until you find the one that's causing the problem. Bear in mind that my first step is critical: if Firefox isn't working in Safe Mode, you likely have a problem other than an incompatible Add-on.

All my add-ons were stripped away in earlier attempts to correct issues. Previously tried safe mode, and actually didn't notice any difference. Thx.

There could have been a problem with the places.sqlite file. I don't know how the migration code with a refresh to transfer bookmarks and history to a new profile works. As some data is transferred automatically with a refresh then in some cases you can transfer the problem with a refresh if it includes transferring corrupted data.

If it happens again then you can check for problems with the places.sqlite database (bookmarks and history) in the Firefox profile folder.
