FIRST PART. All of a sudden we can no longer open or view videos from youtube. All that appears is a black box. Next is when we open add-ons the view is basic, no images, unable to do certain trouble shooting. What have we done over the last four hours to try and correct? From what we remember, deleted and reinstalled firefrox, reinstalled adobe, java, real time. deleted plug on and addons. reset numerous box's in security and other various screens, deleted files extension and plug ins. open in safe mode. I think you get the point, we are at our wits end and need some help. i will try to past a screen print of what the addon page looks like.

Of course that did not work either, I could not find the paint program and tried to save word, no luck. AARRGGHHH.

Any new suggestions?

FIXED. I tried to load images directly and an error said something to the effect,

'could not verify site future dating, and some other stuff." Sorry but i forgot.

So i went and checked our time and date and the only error was our day was on Sunday. I changes to Monday. HOMERUN OVER THE GREEN MONSTER.

We both greatly appreciate your time and energy and most of all not giving up on us. Maybe this solution will help others as well.

That sounds pretty thorough. I have a couple of thoughts.

Possible alien files in Firefox's program folders

In case your Firefox program folders have become corrupted somehow, you may want to replace them. The following method does not involve uninstalling Firefox, just hiding the existing program folder and re-running the installer.

(1) [You probably have done this already, but just in case] Download a fresh "full" installer from https://www.mozilla.org/firefox/all/ to a convenient location. (Scroll down to your preferred language.)

(2) Exit out of Firefox.

(3) Rename the folder

C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox

to

C:\Program Files\OldFirefox

(4) Run the installer you downloaded in #1. It should automatically connect to your existing settings.

Any improvement in behavior?

Note: Some plugins may exist only in that OldFirefox folder. If something essential is missing, look in these folders:

 • C:\Program Files\OldFirefox\Plugins
 • C:\Program Files\OldFirefox\browser\plugins

Additional thoughts:

Connection Settings

By default, Firefox will connect using IE's settings, which I think are the same as Windows' settings. Please check both of the following:

(A) Firefox

orange Firefox button (or Tools menu) > Options > Advanced > Network mini-tab > "Settings" button

The default is "Use system proxy settings" but try "No proxy"

(B) Windows

Either in IE or the Windows Control Panel, call up the Internet Options dialog. On the Connections tab, click LAN Settings. If anything is checked here, make a note of it, then try unchecking everything.

Any difference?

External Security/Privacy Software/Service

In addition to occasionally running afoul of firewalls that object to updates, Firefox does not always integrate completely with some other security/privacy features.

Have you had any error messages or dialogs from your security/filtering software or services, such as untrusted sites, or other peculiarities?

If your security software automatically adds an extension to Firefox, try disabling it. You can return to the Add-ons page, using either:

 • Ctrl+Shift+a
 • orange Firefox button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons

In the left column, click Extensions. Then, if in doubt, disable.

Usually a link will appear above at least one disabled extension to restart Firefox. You can complete your work on the tab and click one of the links as the last step.

Any difference?

On Windows XP, I think Paint is listed under Start > All Programs > Accessories. I suggest saving in PNG format unless there's a photo in the screen shot. You can attach the saved image using the "Browse" button below the box where you type your reply.

You can try to open the addons.mozilla.org website to get an history entry and try to reload the page via Ctrl+F5 or possibly clear the cache and cookies from this website.

"Clear the Cache":

 • Firefox/Tools > Options > Advanced > Network > Cached Web Content: "Clear Now"

"Remove Cookies" from sites causing problems:

 • Firefox/Tools > Options > Privacy > "Use custom settings for history" > Cookies: "Show Cookies"

Thank you for the quick response. We are batting 0 for 4. I tried all above and no improvement. The paint program is gone from my PC ? . Unable to save print screen in PNG format. We re-run installer, no improvement. deleted cookies and cleared cache, no improvement. already had changed to no proxy and LAN was previously looked at. The only extention we have open is real time player and that is a fresh re-install. WE Have NOT had any error messages or dialogs from your security/filtering software or services, such as untrusted sites, or other peculiarities. I do appreciate your time and energy. Is there any other suggestions?

You can try to delete the permissions.sqlite file to reset all permissions.

You can use this button to go to the currently used Firefox profile folder:

 • Help > Troubleshooting Information > Profile Director: Show Folder (Linux: Open Director; Mac: Show in Finder)

Create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problem.

See "Creating a profile":

If the new profile works then you can transfer files from a previously used profile to the new profile, but be cautious not to copy corrupted files to avoid carrying over the problem

Again thank you for your time. We were able to delete the permissions.sqlite file as well as make a new profile. The new profile had same issues unable to view videos as well as plug ins would show in basic view, no pictures. We did receive our first error message in the new profile.

no video with supported format and MIME type found.

We thought it was rather comical when we open the new profile and we were expected to view a video, when all along this is one of the problems. Did research on error message has to do with something HTLM5video. We then disabled within realdownloader. Still no change. We are at the point of negative return. Do we keep trying to fix or do we jump to another browser? I would like to try and fix, my better half says start new. I have 48 hours so i have been told to fix it or delete it.

Please keep the suggestion coming.

Almost forgot. the youtube video is black so i right clicked and here is the message

movie not loaded..
about adobe flash player 13 0 0 182

maybe this info will help.

Does Flash work on other sites, such as the settings manager:

http://www.macromedia.com/support/documentation/en/flashplayer/help/settings_manager02.html

If you can get Flash on that page, and you haven't already disabled the plugin from using hardware acceleration, please try that.

More info: http://helpx.adobe.com/flash-player/kb/video-playback-issues.html#main_Solve_video_playback_issues

If you get "no video with supported format and MIME type found" the the Flash plugin isn't used, but the HTML5 media player is being used and there is not media file with a supported MIME type offered.

If this happens on YouTube then you might be in the HTML5 trial or you have an extension that forces HTLM5 content in a video tag.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance).

 • Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window.

Flash does work on other sites such as Yahoo video's. We had already disabled the plugin from using hardware acceleration. Tried safe mode, disable extensions, default, no difference.

Once again we strike out. Appreciate your time.

Does this happen on the YouTube site or with YouTube videos that are embedded on other web pages?

Does this happen on the YouTube site or with YouTube videos that are embedded on other web pages?

Good question. I had to check, happens when embedded on other pages.

Maybe you are on to something easy to fix?

One reason embedded videos might not work even in Safe Mode is if there is a mixed content block. Do you see any mixed content notification icons on the address bar?

 • Shield icon: Firefox blocked mixed active content. See: Mixed content blocking in Firefox
 • gray triangle with an exclamation point: Firefox is notifying you of mixed display content, but this is not blocked by Firefox's default settings.

From time to time users reports that the shield icon is not always appearing when needed. I don't know whether we have discovered the cause for this (seems to be site-specific), maybe the videos were somehow double-embedded (insecure in secure in insecure). In those cases, some gymnastics were required. For example: Firefox will not play youtube on forums that use the tag.

In another thread, there was a problem with embedded videos on Firefox 28-30 where certain style rules were in effect. This basically was not solved, but if you're curious: Video embeds show up as empty black squares.

Has been a few days and all of a sudden we can now view videos.  ?? They are a little choppy. No idea why or how it has been fixed. Of course i took credit when my better half asked when i fixed the problem. And that credit was short lived. Now she is wondering why when we go to the Add-ons it still shows in basic form, no pics or regular web page. We would like to add on web blocker and a few other addons we had before but remain unable to do so.

Ideas thought suggestions

Does this also happen if you visit the Add-ons site directly?

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance).

 • Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window.

You can remove all data stored in Firefox from a specific domain via "Forget About This Site" in the right-click context menu of an history entry ("History > Show All History" or "View > Sidebar > History") or via the about:permissions page.

Using "Forget About This Site" will remove all data stored in Firefox from that domain like bookmarks, cookies, passwords, cache, history, and exceptions, so be cautious and if you have a password or other data from that domain that you do not want to lose then make sure to backup this data or make a note.

You can't recover from this 'forget' unless you have a backup of the involved files.

It doesn't have any lasting effect, so if you revisit such a 'forgotten' website then data from that website will be saved once again.

Does this also happen if you visit the Add-ons site directly? YES YES

Already did the safe mode check with the extensions. no difference.

Bottom of the ninth, full count and two outs. Time is running out, Thanks foir all your suggestions.

Since you already tried deleting the permissions database and creating a new profile, I would not expect you to find that Firefox is blocking images on the Add-ons site. You can double-check using the Page Info dialog, Media Panel.

While viewing a page on the site:

 • right-click and choose View Page Info > Media
 • Alt+t (open the classic Tools menu) > Page Info > Media

Click in the list of files and use the down arrow key on the keyboard to move down through the list, keeping an eye on the "Block Images from" checkbox, and uncheck it if you see it checked for any of the servers. (see attached screen shot)

Can you load any of the images from the page directly? For example:

If any of those do load, if you reload the main Add-ons page, do the images now populate?

I still suspect external software or an external filter. Maybe it triggers on "addons" (looks like an ad server?) or "cdn". See whether you have anything that might block images based on the address, and see whether you can educate it.

Aha! Sometimes these security certificate errors are invisible unless you load the HTTPS address directly. Glad you found that. And strange that you didn't get certificate errors posting your original question or on other secure sites. (Or maybe there was no reason for you to think it was connected...)
