OS Windows Vista; Firefox 27.0 Suddenly, new tab has a load of big size icons and looks like a copy of MS Windows8. Definately not a look I could ever want. Loads of icons - most I have never used nor visited or visit on a rare basis. so I have no idea where they were selected from. I did not select this options. I have bookmarks and use them. I want the same blank tab to appear. No idea why a new tab should have anything other than blank. Located info to switch this off. There is no option to switch it off - only add more tabs or mess about with layout and theme. so these instructions are not correct or I have located bug of extreme annoyance.

So I attempted to change the about:config as per instructions. browser.newtab.url;about:blank however, this does not fix. I rechecked and it is set as about:blank. So I tried reopening Firefox, but when I select new tab, I still get all the advertising icons.

So what else do I need to fix in about:config to remove absolutely everything to do creating new tabs inbany other way than blank and ready for use.

No idea how that Addon/extension was included, but your adice to remove it resolved the issue. Many thanks philipp

you're very welcome :))
probably it got installed bundled with another software you have downloaded. to make sure that there isn't any other adware lurking on your system, i'd run a scan with the free version of malwarebytes & adwcleaner.

Note that your System Details List shows that you have a user.js file in the profile folder to initialize some prefs each time you start Firefox.

The user.js file is only present if you or other software has created it, so normally it wouldn't be there.
You can check its content with a plain text editor if you didn't create this file yourself.

The user.js file is read each time you start Firefox and initializes preferences to the value specified in this file, so preferences set via user.js can only be changed temporarily for the current session.

I downloaded some codec files for video, now fully uninstalled. so, I must have inadvertantly added the extension. As advised, I've run a full scan to check for adware etc and all is ok.
