I use a parts look up program called Microcat , the service is used with either a local database or a server database. I use the local database option , when the application starts it uses my default browser which is firefox. That part of the application works fine, but when I go to print within the application all I get is either blank tab, or a pop up with a print button that doesn't print. All these features work fine in IE 10 or 11 I have read through and followed several troubleshooting tips from the Mozilla website. I can send screen shots if required . Another thing if I try to print within the browser , all I get is a blank page.

Hi CoryJ100, I don't know why the application would be slower to load in Safe Mode. ?? The difference in behavior suggests that the PDF Download extension or another one could be causing the blank window to persist instead of giving way to the external opening of the PDF. Can you disable that extension? You can do that on the Add-ons page. Either:

  • Ctrl+Shift+a
  • orange Firefox button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons

In the left column, click Extensions.

I'm not clear on which part is in Firefox and which part is outside Firefox. The application generates an HTML page in Firefox, and it lays out normally on screen? But when you try to print (e.g., Ctrl+p in Firefox) you get a blank page?

There are some page layouts that Firefox has problems printing. Usually these are relating to style rules you can override, but unfortunately there's no universal prescription. Without hands on the page, it's really difficult to suggest a workaround.

Does the vendor provide any advice on browser compatibility?

If necessary, you could make IE your default browser. Firefox will run normally, but external links will open in IE.

Is there a way to send you screen shots? Everything in this program is done inside Firefox, or which ever browser is default. a new tab opens when printing anything inside the application. The tab always opens blank ( about.blank)

You can attach screen shots here (use the Browse... button below the text box) or post them on an image hosting site and paste the links here.

Firefox has some security restrictions on local folders that other browsers do not have, so that might be an issue. Usually if there is a security restriction, it will be listed in Firefox's Browser Console.

Try this:

  • Open the Browser Console (Ctrl+Shift+j)
  • This console lists tons of other stuff, so it's usually helpful to "unclick" the CSS button to reduce the clutter
  • Click Clear
  • Then switch over to the page and click the button that launches the blank window
  • Then switch back to the Browser Console and check for errors

Anything?

[16:44:30.983] TypeError: Components.classes['@mozilla.org/browser/global-history;2'] is undefined @ chrome://pdfdownload/content/pdfDownloadOverlay.js:375 I tried several times to see what error, not sure if that helps. I have some screen shots in my Dropbox, but doesn't seem to be a way to post from my mobile phone. I'll try it from my pc asap

That error relates to the PDF Download extension. I'm not sure whether that is related to your application, but you could test in Firefox's Safe Mode. That's a standard diagnostic tool to bypass interference by extensions (and some custom settings). More info: Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode.

You can restart Firefox in Safe Mode using

Help > Restart with Add-ons Disabled

In the dialog, click "Start in Safe Mode" (not Reset)

Any difference?

Try to disable hardware acceleration in Firefox.

Yes in safe mode all add-ons disabled, the only draw back is the application is extremely slow to load. This time the new tab goes to connecting then the tab closes and in a few seconds, the Adobe reader window opens with the print button, the same as it does in IE.

Safe Mode disable the JavaScript JIT compiler, so if that application uses a lot of complicated JavaScript that this would be noticeable.
