Firefox 26 Has Completely Removed Download Progress Display

For those who are not happy with Firefox's removal of the downloads display progress bar in the 25 series, you'll be even more unhappy with the 26 series. Even typing about:config and isetting browser.download.useToolkitUI to true no longer works. I sincerely despise companies that DO NOT provide their users OPTIONS, OPTIONS. OPTIONS! Instead of pissing off a sizable number of people who prefer things the way they were. Stop changing things for the worst! I want to monitor my downloads progress without having to take an extra step by clicking on the "Library" tab. Who are you trying to impress?

If you are unhappy now, what until you see what is coming in Firefox 28, with the new Australis user interface.

You should still see a download progress bar if you click the download button on the Navigation Toolbar or alternatively keep the about:downloads window open in a separate window it the animated downloads button isn't sufficient to indicate that there are unfinished downloads.

Hi :

Unfortunately, that is *still* an unnecessary step that is not exactly ideal (at least for me). I download a lot of items during the time I spend using Firefox. For me to have to pause, and then... "click" a separate icon, to see the progress of my downloads just seems to be a wasted step. The way it worked previously (IMHO) was far more fluid, and was done without any other intervention. As I stated originally, an option to go back to the "old" way should be at least configured into the programming for subsequent "upgrades". What I do not understand is with so many "open source" programers' stirring this pot, which 'genius' decided that, "hey, this is a brilliant idea; let's leave out some user options!" That is NOT progress, my friends. Indeed, that smacks of arrogant hubris at its core. The next time these open source contributors decide to "improve" the way Firefox is used by ordinary folks, they really need to provide alternatives for people who just might NOT like their latest brilliant ideas... OPTIONS... always a very GOOD thing. I am certainly not the lone voice on this one. I'll just stick with version 25.1 for now until someone starts listening to the legions of users on these kinds of issues.

And I thought I was the only one with this problem!

This is a ridiculous design decision. And BTW, the "download button in the navigation bar" doesn't display anything for me. There must be a bug there.

And finally I need to make the move to Chrome. I have stuck with FF for a long time and although Chrome was supposed to be better, there were too many little things they didn't have (and had no intention of adding) that my beloved FF did. But now FF has more and more things changed or missing than Chrome does for me. This removal of the old download window is just the final straw. Wasn't FFs ideal to give users options? You are just going the same as IE as far as I can see. As I write this, Chrome is just downloading and within a few moments of migrating my prefs etc, I will kiss FF one last goodbye. I have been as faithful as I can be but now you have started to limit the free choice of your users, I think I will be one of many to jump ship.

Well, folks... It appears that we are in "minority dissent" mode. One never knows who is paying attention. And, whether those who 'are' paying attention can actually effectuate any changes. Frustrating, to be sure. Lincoln once opined, "In simplicity, there is eloquence". Apparently, these so-called "open-source" programmers/contributors only listen to their own voices. This is obviously illustrated by the fact that after every 'subtle' change, they NEVER actually address any of these issues. Changes implemented remain the same; and people like you and me, are left with our voiceless frustrations and irritations. I guess this is just the way things are done.

Conclusion: I'm *still* an unhappy user with Mozilla and the way they reach ultimate decisions. Hmmnnn....

I thought it was a bug at first, just couldnt believe someone would do something so stupid as removing the DL progress bar. What next, no bookmarks? I will stay on FF 25 until it is obsolete then move to google chrome unless the progress bar is back. I wonder if someone was inspired by MS silly removal of the start menu on windows 8 and decided to do something equally silly with firefox.

The DL icon to click on is not a satisfactory alternative. For one thing it covers a big part of the toolbar and tabs. Unimpressed to say the least.

You can display the new Downloads Manager in a tab by opening the about:downloads page and you can consider to open this page in a separate window and possible resize and move both windows for a convenient layout.

Another alternative is to use Free Download Manager: http://filehippo.com/download_free_download_manager/

In some cases it downloads faster than Firefox.

Or another alternative is to move to a different browser. Opening the separate window for downloads is ridiculous. The good thing about the older (and better) way, was the window closed when downloads finished. This extra window is just stupid. It may seem just a small thing to some people (and obviously the fools who removed it) but when you have something that worked, why break it? They should have had an "option" for people to choose from. Wasn't that one of their missions when first starting FF? Give people ways to customise it how "they" liked? That's long gone down the toilet. FF was Faithfully Forever but now it's F*cking F*cked.

Just a note that the Australis mentioned in beginning of thread is Not going to be in Firefox 28.0 as the earliest version that may or will have it is Firefox 29.0. The Australis did not move/merge with 28.0 from Nightly to Aurora channel where Fx 28.0 is currently being worked on at moment.

The new "downloads window" is useless. Who is the braindead idiot that invented it !? And where is the option to get the old window back ? I agree with other poster above, i thought FF was customizable.... If someone likes the new window, fine, let them have it. BUT GIVE ALL OTHERS AN OPTION TO KEEP THE OLD WINDOW ! Forcing a GUI onto people is VERY stupid....

HAVE MICROSOFT BOUGHT MOZILLA !?

I have downgraded to FF 25.01...

  • my (not too helpful !) explanatory comment in a related thread.

The better news is that there have been conversations (slightly behind the scenes rather than within this particular forum) with forums helpers and forum staff.

It is my expectation that further comments on the situation, from Mozilla staff, may be made soon in that other thread (hopefully next week before many are off for Christmas) and so it would be worth watching that thread /questions/980127

This recently created addon brings back the old download window: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/downloads-window/

Currently has a few issues, but hey, at least it functions like the old download window.

Once Australis hits, I'm done with Firefox.

The new australis looks like chrome, so maybe they will name it: "ChromeFox"
