How to LOCK the Find Bar?

Does anyone know how to lock the Find Bar so that it doesn't disappear each time I press CTRL-F?

Also any ideas on how I can get it to stop auto-wrapping to the top of the page, or at the very least, make a "ding" after it reaches the bottom of the page?

Thanks

Hello Chaosdruid, it is the correct behaviour, ctrl+f open find bar, try Firefox Safe Mode to see if the problem goes away. Firefox Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode that turns off some settings and disables most add-ons (extensions and themes).

(If you're using an added theme, switch to the Default theme.)

If Firefox is open, you can restart in Firefox Safe Mode from the Help menu by clicking on the Restart with Add-ons Disabled... menu item:
FirefoxSafeMode

If Firefox is not running, you can start Firefox in Safe Mode as follows:

  • On Windows: Hold the Shift key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
  • On Mac: Hold the option key while starting Firefox.
  • On Linux: Quit Firefox, go to your Terminal and run firefox -safe-mode
(you may need to specify the Firefox installation path e.g. /usr/lib/firefox)

Once you get the pop-up, just select "'Start in Safe Mode" Safe Mode Fx 15 - Win

If the issue is not present in Firefox Safe Mode, your problem is probably caused by an extension, and you need to figure out which one. Please follow the Troubleshoot extensions, themes and hardware acceleration issues to solve common Firefox problems article to find the cause.

To exit Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before opening Firefox for normal use again.

Thanks

Hello RodneyD, when you update to latest version then the find bar is specific to each tab, and if you press CTRL-F, find bar doesn't disappear anymore.

Update Firefox to the latest version

thank you

Try to disable this shortcut key sequence with an extension:

Your other issue can be caused by one of the installed extensions.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance).

  • Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window.

I would much prefer to have the find bar there all the time. If you are searching within pages, then you now have to re-open the find bar each time. Could this be made a preference in about:config?

You can look at this extension:

The wrapping vs. not wrapping vs. user option was debated in the past, and the UI decision was it is better as it is: Bug 279014 – Bring back option for wrap/no wrap when using find toolbar. I don't think anything good would come of commenting in that old bug.

On the other hand, it appears that a wrap notification is under consideration for the FindBar Tweak extension. You could voice your interest over here: https://github.com/Quicksaver/FindBar-Tweak/issues/61

"Hello RodneyD, when you update to latest version then the find bar is specific to each tab, and if you press CTRL-F, find bar doesn't disappear anymore."

This seems to be incorrect:

Using CTRL-F on the last tab, creating a new one, no Find bar

Using CTRL-F on a tab (tab2), creating a new tab (tab6), no find bar

Hi Chaosdruid, what you are describing sounds like the default behavior. How would you prefer the find bar to behave?

I am simply saying, that if anyone is wondering how to make the find-bar turn on & then stay there when tabbing through the page tabs, CTRL-F does NOT make it stay on in all the other tabs. It now appears to be page specific.

If I turn it on in tab 2 and tab 6, it stays on, but in tabs 1, 3, 4 and 5 it will not be on, nor will it be on if I start tab7.

Under these conditions it is not really a bar then, it is a page specific function.

This could have been easily addressed by making it use the add-on bar, which IS always there, or making the Find-bar the same as the add-on bar so that it is there always, just like it used to be. I have no clue why it was changed to remove that particular funcionailty, though the new look and up/down arrows are much better.

If you are telling me there is something wrong with my FF, I can not be bothered to begin testing in safe mode as I would have to shut all my work down to prove you wrong or right.

I have used the FindBar Tweak add-on as of today, which makes it do what it used to, and what I want it to.

Hi Chaosdruid, yes, that's right, the find bar was intentionally changed to "per tab" instead of "per window" in Firefox 25, so Ctrl+f also is "per tab".

The FindBar Tweak extension does allow you to change the bar from per-tab to per-window. For anyone puzzled by its settings, I have attached a screen shot showing what needs to be changed.
