Unable to recover tabs from browser on recently closed windows

Yesterday, when I wasn't bothered opening everything from my browser, I opened a tab next to it to do some of my homework, and without thinking, i closed the browser with the last browser as well, which meant that i lost all my information from that, but didn't realize till the next day.

I've had these sorts of problems before but I was able to look at my history, then re-open my recently closed window. This time however when I tried do the same thing the next day the 'recently closed window' was grey, as though it didn't save the things I didn't open before, and the worst part about this is that I have lost probably almost or more than 200 tabs, and this isn't a laughing matter, because all the things which I had before were things which I've been keeping and saving for months, till I was going to use it.

I tried to find a solution by looking back at my earliest history and starting back, but most of the information I had had been kept for over a few months, meaning I'm unable to check it.

So could i kindly ask you to find a solution for me please because this has gotten me very depressed that I can't recover the things I like as losing it made me depressed to the point that I lied on my bed for a few hours without sleeping.

Thank You.

Hi Firemonkey008, I'm assuming the .bak file looks like a good candidate to have the missing session from very recently. That's what we're hoping to find. Yes, that's the one you will rename to sessionstore.js. You will need to rename or delete the existing sessionstore.js first, or Windows won't let you do the rename.

Don't exit Firefox yet, keep it open as long as possible. Check out this painfully long thread about a recent similar situation: I have a problem restoring the tabs from the previous session.

Make a backup copy of the current versions of the sessionstore.js and sessionstore.bak files.
sessionstore.bak is created at the start of each session and is a copy of the sessionstore.js file form the previous session.

You can use this button to go to the Firefox profile folder:

  • Help > Troubleshooting Information > Profile Directory: Show Folder (Linux: Open Directory; Mac: Show in Finder)

thank you very much for providing me with this thread, i was unable to find this so i'm grateful you did this for me, but im unsure if i should restart firefox from the troubleshooting information page as it said all my information would be removed, should i still do it even though i changed the sessionstore to .js?

also its fine if i have to sessionstore scripts?

Hi Firemonkey008, don't use the Reset feature for this problem. Reset will not help with this.

How many sessionstore files do you have? Normally, you have two: .js and .bak, but if you have others with numbers in the name, it can indicate that Firefox is running into problems updating the file for some reason.

If it's hard to tell which is which, make sure Windows isn't hiding file extensions from you: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/show-hide-file-name-extensions

Ok i checked that, and it said all files were already shown. So is it normal to have sessionstore.bak, sessionstore script and sessionstore-1 script. And when I change it 2 .js the sessionstore script seems like the other one with .js, so is sessionstore-1 script supposed 2 be there?

Files with names like sessionstore-1.js and sessionstore-2.js are not normally created unless Firefox has a problem updating sessionstore.js. Those might or might not have anything useful in them. Are they recent??

It is dated a 26/12/2012, and has 0kb, so that's fine? I just need to rename .bak to .js and the other .js i leave alone? Sorry I'm asking so much questions, I just don't want to make a mistake when trying to recover it.

So I deleted the other session and renamed .bak, with a pop-up saying changin the file name extension may make it unusable, but i still said yes. I have then closed my browser and re-opened it, checking all the potential things to recover my data, was i suppose to restart computer, re-download firefox, or did i mess up?

Firefox needs to be closed when you manually alter its settings files. With Firefox closed, copy the backup you made of sessionstore.bak to the folder and try the same thing again.

its seems i messed up and forgot to make a backup, and lost everything. sorry for wasting your time.
