Hello,

Whenever i'm trying to visit Hotmail/Outlook, Firefox is hangs and not responding for about 15-30 sec. It is not just Hotmail/Outlook, any HTML5 based websites (like Canv.as, 9GAG etc.) causing same problems too. It is not relative to my system, because my laptop is just couple months old and has Intel i5 processor and 8 GB RAM.

Here are the steps that i already tried and not helped:

1. Delete and create profile 2. Clean restart without add-ons 3. Clear browser history, caches, temp folders etc. 4. Uninstall/Clean Firefox install

Please check out the video below for see in action.

What am i supposed to do? I'm using Firefox since 2005 and i don't wanna use other sneaky browsers.

Any help will be appreciated.

Hi bambamtusa, since it only happens on the first visit in a session and with more modern pages, one other thought: Do you have a lot of fonts on your system? See: Firefox hangs on Websites (example: g2play.net) about disabling downloadable fonts (gfx.downloadable_fonts.enabled => false).

Did you also check for problems caused by plugins (plugins aren't affected by Safe Mode)?

You can check for problems with current Flash plugin versions and try these:

  • disable a possible RealPlayer Browser Record Plugin extension for Firefox and update the RealPlayer if installed
  • disable protected mode in the Flash plugin (Flash 11.3+ on Windows Vista and later)
  • disable hardware acceleration in the Flash plugin

@cor-el, thank you for your answer.

Yes, i tried in Safe Mode too. Also disabled Flash plugin and hardware acceleration but nothings changed. Every time when i try to visit Hotmail, Outlook, Canv. As, 9GAG and some spesific web sites like these, Firefox is froze for about 15 to 30 seconds. I'm not just talking about in Firefox 22.0, it happens since Firefox 20.0.

Hello,

The Reset Firefox feature can fix many issues by restoring Firefox to its factory default state while saving your essential information. Note: This will cause you to lose any Extensions, Open websites, and some Preferences.

To Reset Firefox do the following:

  1. Go to Firefox > Help > Troubleshooting Information.
  2. Click the "Reset Firefox" button.
  3. Firefox will close and reset. After Firefox is done, it will show a window with the information that is imported. Click Finish.
  4. Firefox will open with all factory defaults applied.

Further information can be found in the Refresh Firefox - reset add-ons and settings article.

Thank you.

@Waka_Flocka_Flame, thank you for you answer but unfortunatelly no, i've tried this step many times and still it's hangs for about half minutes. I think i'll give it a shot to Google Chrome.

Try disabling graphics hardware acceleration. Since this feature was added to Firefox, it has gradually improved, but there still are a few glitches.

You might need to restart Firefox in order for this to take effect, so save all work first (e.g., mail you are composing, online documents you're editing, etc.).

Then perform these steps:

  • Click the orange Firefox button at the top left, then select the "Options" button, or, if there is no Firefox button at the top, go to Tools > Options.
  • In the Firefox options window click the Advanced tab, then select "General".
  • In the settings list, you should find the Use hardware acceleration when available checkbox. Uncheck this checkbox.
  • Now, restart Firefox and see if the problems persist.

Additionally, please check for updates for your graphics driver by following the steps mentioned in the following Knowledge base articles:

Thank you.

@Waka_Flocka_Flame, i'm sorry but i did it what you said already.

Yes, i tried in Safe Mode too. Also disabled Flash plugin and hardware acceleration but nothings changed.

Does the application exit when it hangs?

if so follow below.

  1. Enter about:crashes in the address bar (that's where you enter your website URL) and press Enter. You should now see a list of submitted crash reports.
  2. Copy the 5 most recent crash ID's that you see in the crash report window and paste them into your response here.

More information and further troubleshooting steps can be found in the Troubleshoot Firefox crashes (closing or quitting unexpectedly) article.

Try to create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problems.

See "Creating a profile":

If the new profile works then you can transfer some files from an existing profile to the new profile, but be careful not to copy corrupted files.

@Waka_Flocka_Flame, there is no crash reports because it's didn't crash before.

@cor-el, sorry but tried before and it didn't help.

can you test this on the latest nightly, i use Outlook myself and get no such errors.

nightly.mozilla.org

Thank you for creating the video.

It is troubling that Firefox is "not responding" for about 8 seconds. Do you notice any unusual disk activity during that time?

Does this problem recur on every visit to the page, or only on the first visit during a session?

One of the key changes in Firefox 20 was to the private browsing feature. Is that a private browsing window?

By any chance is it a Samsung laptop? Some strange problems have been attributed to the Samsung Help Center application, which apparently removes some files from browser caches.

Try to disable hardware acceleration in Firefox.

jscher2000, thank you for your answers.

1. There is no known unusual disk activity during that time. 2. Yes, exactly, it is happening only on the first visit during a session. 3. This is normal window, not a private browsing window. 4 . It is Lenovo IdeaPad Z580 - Windows 7 Ultimate

I tried everything, literally everything to fix that problem but no, still happens. Whenever i'm trying to visit a really modern UI (HTML5 etc.) web page, it hangs and/or freeze and mostly i have to go Task Manager and kill to Firefox to get rid of it. Just because i have to stop Firefox everytime, there is no crash report that i can proof what is going on in here.

jscher2000, sir, i take my hat off to you.

After changing "gfx.downloadable_fonts" line "enabled" to "disabled" and restart Firefox, yes, it's finally fixed. Hotmail/Outlook and other modern UI websites flowing like a river right now, so my tears of joy too. I know words can't describe my appreciation but thank you so much for your time, effort and helps.

That's what i called "the solution."

Best wishes from Turkey.

Hi bambamtusa, thank you for reporting back, and I'm glad we stumbled into the solution. It's not well documented yet, but hopefully we can spread the word.

For other readers, the key clues appear to be:

  • Only slow on the first visit to the site during the session
  • Not improved in Safe Mode
  • Not specific to Flash
  • Affects Firefox 20 and later (possibly Firefox 19 and later)

I see the replies but they didnt help , if i click on the hotmail icon firefox says canot fine the server, but if I use bookmark for outlook I get it straight away.

any ideas on this please

If you have bookmarked a page to a specific mail server then you may have to delete this bookmark and use a bookmark with 'simple' URL like https://mail.live.com to make the server redirect you automatically. Bookmarking a link to a specific can stop working at any time.
