Can't attach files in

Ever since my Hotmail account was upgraded to Outlook, the file attachment button doesn't work. The arrow doesn't even turn into a hand - it's as if Firefox doesn't even see it. It works fine in IE, but I prefer to use Firefox. I have seen various people offering solutions such as getting the latest version of Silverlight or disabling it, removing Adblocker and installing Webmail Adblocker instead. I have tried all these options and nothing works.

Surely this is an issue with Firefox that needs to be resolved. Until then I would like a work around solution.

Mysteriously my problem seems to have resolved itself.

All I can assume is that there was a fix when I updated Firefox to version 20.0.1

Thanks for everyone that attempted to diagnose the problem.

Many site issues can be caused by corrupt cookies or cache. In order to try to fix these problems, the first step is to clear both cookies and the cache. Note: This will temporarily log you out of all sites you're logged in to. To clear cache and cookies do the following:

  1. Go to Firefox > History > Clear recent history or (if no Firefox button is shown) go to Tools > Clear recent history.
  2. Under "Time range to clear", select "Everything".
  3. Now, click the arrow next to Details to toggle the Details list active.
  4. From the details list, check Cache and Cookies and uncheck everything else.
  5. Now click the Clear now button.

Further information can be found in the Clear your cache, history and other personal information in Firefox article.

Did you try to disable Silverlight to see if that makes the web page make use of other methods?

I use IE Privacy Keeper to clear cookies and history everytime I close IE or Firefox. It runs automatically. When I reload Firefox and go into Outlook the problem is still there.

I have tried disabling Silverlight, it makes no difference to the functionality of Outlook.

Try Firefox Safe Mode to see if the problem goes away. Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode, which disables most add-ons.

(If you're not using it, switch to the Default theme.)

  • You can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by holding the Shift key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
  • Or open the Help menu and click on the Restart with Add-ons Disabled... menu item while Firefox is running.

Once you get the pop-up, just select "'Start in Safe Mode"

If the issue is not present in Firefox Safe Mode, your problem is probably caused by an extension, and you need to figure out which one. Please follow the Troubleshoot extensions, themes and hardware acceleration issues to solve common Firefox problems article for that.

To exit the Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before opening Firefox for normal use again.

When you figure out what's causing your issues, please let us know. It might help other users who have the same problem.

I tried Safe Mode - problem still there. I tried Normal mode also with all Extensions disabled - problem still there.

Are you getting any specific error, what happening when you try to upload the attachment in

Nothing happens. As I said before - the arrow doesn't turn into a hand. I can't click on attach files at all.

Can you click on other parts of that line like the field that shows the file name?

I can't even get that far. I can't click on the paper clip to attach files. As I said the arrow doesn't turn into a hand.

I suffer the same problem exactly. Please can someone help.

Thanks for everyone that attempted to diagnose the problem.

I solved my problem by uninstalling silver-light.

OK, now I have a problem attaching files in Outlook (formerly Hotmail), but only in Firefox. There are several threads running on Microsoft Community regarding this same issue, but the only solution which works for me is to use IE (suggested by Microsoft Outlook Community). However, I use Firefox because of the Zotero extension and I wish to remain using it!! The Outlook message is "We're still getting set up. Please try again." I have followed all of your advice (emptying cache files etc.) and can confirm that I do not get the problem in Safe Mode. Nevertheless, I still have the problem when all extensions are disabled. As I don't have many, I was able to check each one individually (I'll try anything once!), but as expected, that didn't highlight any anomolies. Have you any more ideas that I can try????

I am also having this problem since today using Firefox 24 Beta 9 and 10. I haven't changed changed anything except for a Beta update from 9 to 10 today. But Beta 9 had the same problem.

I have recently had a number of Windows updates. Could that have caused it?
