After rebooting my computer over the weekend I saw that my Yahoo Toolbar was missing (as was the ability to open a 2nd window). Tried reinstalling toolbar because my PC thinks I have the latest version already installed. How can I install it fresh? Or rather how do I uninstall the missing toolbar so that I can then install it anew? I'm running XP Pro on this PC. I use the toolbar for accessing many sites as well as for the Bookmarks. Please tell me what I've done to cause this so that I may avoid this inconvenience in the future. Thank you.

Astonishing!!! I repeated the Corrupt_localstore.rdf steps 4 times and it finally worked. Did the same thing each time so that I would know exactly how to correct it if this should happen again. And all this time I thought repeating the same things again and again and hoping for a different outcome was the definition of insanity. Well I may be insane but I did get a different outcome, so who's the crazy one this time?!

I want to thank you both again for the help. I tried to get help from Yahoo and never got a response after being assured I would get an answer - soon. That was days ago and nothing yet. You both responded in hours. (And jscher2000 - you continued to offer advice in spite of the peculiar nature of the problem). I truly am grateful. Not only is the toolbar back but didn't lose a single app. I will be sure to recommend the forum to all. I already suggest Firefox to everyone. Now I can happily tell them about this.

Have a great weekend. Michael

Could you check whether the Yahoo extension is disabled in Firefox and try re-enabling it?

orange Firefox button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons > Extensions category

Disabled extensions appear toward the bottom with a grayed background.

If it's completely missing, hmmm...

Thank you for the info. Finally after many attempts I received an error message saying that the toolbar was incompatible with Firefox 19, so since it appears that 20 is almost ready to go I am going to wait to see if its fixed. If not I will go back to an earlier version. That's what I get for allowing auto updates. If and when I get it back I will let you know.

Thanks again. Michael

I'm surprised it stopped working. Do you have version 2.5.4, updated on Feb. 21, 2013? http://us.toolbar.yahoo.com/

The latest version of Firefox is 19.0.2, although when I checked there is a version 20 that is almost ready. I'm going to wait until the end of the week to see if I can update to 20. As for the latest version of the toolbar, I tried reinstalling several times but since my PC thinks its already updated it doesn't actually reinstall it. I tried removing the toolbar and doing a fresh install but it repeatedly me to "Agree & Accept" and Restart until I finally was able to see a message that the yahoo toolbar is incompatible with 19.0.2. If that had come up earlier today I wouldn't have wasted so much time trying to figure out what was wrong. With hope the next version will restore it or I will install version 18.

Thanks again.

You can try to check for problems with the localstore.rdf file.

It is possible that there is a problem with the file(s) that store the extensions registry.

Delete the files extensions.* (e.g. extensions.sqlite, extensions.ini, extensions.cache) and compatibility.ini in the Firefox profile folder to reset the extensions registry.

New files will be created when required.

See "Corrupt extension files":

If you see disabled, not compatible, extensions in "Tools > Add-ons > Extensions" then click the Tools button at the left side of the Search Bar (or click the "Find Updates" button in older Firefox versions) to check if there is a compatibility update available.

If this hasn't helped then also try to delete the addons.sqlite file.

Try to create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problems.

See "Creating a profile":

If the new profile works then you can transfer some files from an existing profile to the new profile, but be careful not to copy corrupted files.

For me, the one from the link above does install and run on 19.0.2. I was installing the xpi file directly into Firefox (clicking the Allow button), not using an external installer.

Thanks for all the good info. As soon as I get home later I'll give them all a try and let you know the results jscher2000 & cor-el. Great to know there are knowledgeable people ready to respond so quickly. Michael

Well, I tried all of the suggestions but still no "visible" toolbar. Still says I have the latest version installed. Even congratulated me on keeping my Firefox updated. When installing the toolbar new it only keep repeating "Accept , etc." and Restart. Only when I restart there is still nothing there. Reinstalling only repeats that my toolbar is updated. I've checked every setting I could find to see if I somehow changed a setting, but can't find anything. The latest version of the toolbar is listed in the Extensions list as active, so I have to admit I'm at a loss. I can take a couple of screenshots if that will help, but other than that I don't know what I could have screwed up. Thanks for the suggestions. I'll run them again on the weekend when I have more time.

Enabled in the Extensions list sounds like progress. You can show or hide available toolbars using either of these methods:

  • right-click a blank area of the tab bar
  • View menu > Toolbars

If the bar is "checked" but does not appear, the localstore.rdf file might have become corrupted and need to be regenerated. cor-el posted an article on that further up this thread.

Yes I did that step. Should I give it another try? I have to admit I'm baffled. The toolbar is listed as active and the latest version and appears to be working just fine except for the fact that it is invisible. lol There are a couple of other functions that aren't working as before so I'm thinking they may also be the result of the Firefox upgrade to 19.0.2. Everything was fine before that. Did I mention that on my laptop (Win 7) all is well. I've kept XP Pro on my desktop because of all the graphics programs that would need upgrading at a cost that is not in the cards at the moment. When I have some time I'm going to do the 7/XP split that I'm told will work for dinosaurs like me. As an aside - What do you think of Cloud storage? I'm thinking of one in particular that would free up my secondary drive that I now use for backup to not only give me more GB to work with but having 2 drives might be the way to simplify the whole XP & 7 issue. Just a thought. But 1st I will spend my weekend solving this issue. Without my GMail link I had a big problem opening one of my accts last night. Kept trying to send a message to a backup email acct. Just annoying.

I'll let you know what happens and what foolish mistake I made to cause all this.

When you are in Customize mode, does the Yahoo! bar appear -- and then disappear in normal mode? To switch, you can use:

View > Toolbars > Customize or
right-click a blank area of the tab bar > Customize

Toolbars sometimes get merged unexpectedly, so watch out for that. (But renaming localstore.rdf should have resolved that.)
