Random Crashes FF 18.0.2

I have random crashes with FF while browsing various websites. It can crash when switching websites or even when not even moving the mouse.

I think I may have an incompatible plugin somewhere. Can anyone offer some advice?

The Reset Firefox feature can fix many issues by restoring Firefox to its factory default state while saving your essential information. Note: This will cause you to lose any Extensions, Open websites, and some Preferences.

To Reset Firefox do the following:

  1. Go to Firefox > Help > Troubleshooting Information.
  2. Click the "Reset Firefox" button.
  3. Firefox will close and reset. After Firefox is done, it will show a window with the information that is imported. Click Finish.
  4. Firefox will open with all factory defaults applied.

Further information can be found in the Refresh Firefox - reset add-ons and settings article.

Did this fix your problems? Please report back to us!

Firefox reset did not work. Updated original post with update.

Thanks!

Since some crashes seem to be somewhat in relation with java... get the recent java Version and possible also make a fresh firefox install :)

Uninstalled/reinstalled Firefox/Java.

Crashed shortly thereafter.--

Are you using Firefox Sync?

if you use sync, try to deactivate sync on your computer and login new, make some backup of your profile folder (recokmmended in general) and clear your firefox sync data - so everything gets added again in a fresh, new way.

Not using FF Sync.

In the meantime... more crashes :)

If you install Firefox nightly, does that resolve the crashes (at least one is fixed in Firefox 20)

http://nightly.mozilla.org/

would not go so far to install a nightly... after all they are not so stable from update to update... but http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/all-aurora.html is a good midde way between stability and experimental!

I know at least a handful persons, which have switched to Firefox Aurora because of trouble with stable Firefox Versions.

If you switch release channels, consider using Aurora :)

shut down Google desktop and Mozilla will stop crashing.

I don't have google desktop, nor do I use google search and have issues with firefox 18.0.2 crashing at random. I've also run the uninstall/reinstall, turned off toolbars and addons, still does the at random crashing. I believe the issue needs to be dealt with by Mozilla/Firefox for a patch.

BTW, I don't use firefox sync either. I only use a desktop pc., no other devices so don't have any use for sync.

Still crashing---

No google desktop, and I don't want to try any nightly builds/beta due to incompatibility with some add-ons. I have also tried running FF with all add-ons disabled and still get random crashes.
I think it has something to do with the latest java updates. I'm going to uninstall all Java and try that for a while. I'm all out of other ideas....

3 more crashes in the last few hours.

Any other ideas?

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance).

  • Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe mode start window or otherwise make changes.

In Firefox Safe mode these changes are effective:

  • all extensions are disabled
  • the default theme is used (no persona)
  • userChrome.css and userContent.css are ignored
  • the default toolbar layout is used (localstore-safe.rdf)
  • the Javascript JIT compiler is disabled
  • hardware acceleration is disabled
  • plugins are not affected
  • preferences are not affected

Argh. Still crashing.

FF updated to 19.0 and still crashing even in safe mode.

I have the default theme and was in safe mode this last crash.

I would rather not switch to Chrome. Any other ideas?

We are digging into this with the devs, we may ask you for some more information as we try to diagnose this.

Do you have Zone alarm on this computer?

No I do not have Zone Alarm. I was able to stop the freezing completely by going into the task manager and shutting down Google Desktop. I then restarted Google desktop and it froze again. Do not ask me why but I am thinking now what is more essential to me Firefox or Google Desktop, both have competitors that can do the job.

This has happened in 3 different computers and laptops in the office. Same action/reaction.

OP here.

I have/had Zonealarm installed. The Zonealarm extension has always been disabled though. I'm uninstalling it all now to see if that helps any.

Ask any questions you can to help me out, I'll answer when I get home from work.

Thanks again to all that are trying to help.
