I had a technician to clean and remove Babylon search from my computer and it still attached itself to whatever I'm doing. I uninstalled Mozilla fox at least five times , then re-installed. However, I cannot get rid of Babylon search. I spent $100 dollars to resolved this problem and it's not working. I handle high confidential files on my computer. I am afraid to open the file due to fear of information being compromised.

Please Help!!!

START : CONTROL PANEL : UNINSTALL A PROGRAM - try to uninstall there.. if it does not work, download CCleaner (FREE) and use the custom uninstall feature to remove it. You can also clean up your browser by running it twice (first window you open it in). Next, download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware (FREE VERSION) and run it. There's a good chance it will pick it up.

Unfortunately somewhere along the lines Babylon was de-classified as malware... I have no idea how that happened but it is the sad truth

Have you check from Firefox in Add-Ons menu and in Extensions of it ? (tools->Add-ons or Firefox Button and Add-ons)

Spiros K. Pigkas மூலமாக திருத்தப்பட்டது

please make sure that you don't have any babylon related extensions or other suspicious entries like 3rd-party-toolbars presently installed under firefox > addons > extensions (babylon also might install some unwanted stuff that comes under the names "Browser Manager", "Browser Protector", "Bprotector", "Object Installer", etc.) or in the windows control panel > programs section.

afterwards install the search reset addon - it will revert the most common customziations those adware programs do in firefox back to the default: https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/searchreset/

> Close Firefox and open again

> write in the address Bar "about:config " and click Enter

> Write in the search engine "Babylon."

> Click on any 'Babylon' preferences with the right mouse button and select "Reset"

The steps provided by BabylonLTD do NOT always work. Case in point:

I had the same problem as many others. First, it needs to be made clear that, despite the fact that Babylon has been "declassified" as being malware, it IS, in fact, STILL malware. Now, moving forward, I followed the steps provided...NOT because they were provided here, but because I found them (the exact same steps, but provided by several individuals having no affiliation with BabylonLTD...and in the search, four items came up. Two of them were reset through the "Reset" procedure. Unfortunately, the other two were NOT reset, and CAN'T be, as the "Reset" option doesn't appear to have any effect on them. The two I am speaking of are as follows (in order of Preference Name, Status, Type, & Value):

avg.install.userHPSettings, user set, string, http://isearch.babylon.com/?affID=116632&tt=0213_3&babsrc=HP_ss&mntrId=8cb75e91000000000000266d5782c52e

avg.install.userSPSettings, user set, string, Search the web (Babylon)

See below for screen capture of what, exactly, I'm referring to. As I state above, these two strings are NOT able to be reset. Why??? I wish I knew. If someone has a useful (as in, it WILL either get rid of these two, or will correctly/properly reset them to what they should be, it would be greatly appreciated.

Please see the link i provided above, which has removal instructions. Anyhow i copy the instructions for your quick reference. This is the only solution, as it involves registry entries removal as well as correction in master boot record. pl follow and you will be getting rid of it. There is no ohter solution worth trying.

babylon is a browser hijacker , a pup potentially unwanted programme. Merely by deleting the searches and deleting babylon entries does not solve this problem as the tool bar changes the master boot record. The solution is Hi, it is a case of browser hijack when you downloaded some software. The best way is to boot your computer in safe mode, pressing f8 and then select when you boot and then go to start, then run and type "regedit", go to edit menu , and then to find menu and find for babylon*.* and delete all the entries by choosing f3 key, to find another and so on , connected with babylon. It is also possible that the tool bar have entries in the master boot record. So , go to START, Computer, right click the properties and turn off system restore. Have the installation cd, and when prompt from cd comes enter to boot installation cd, and then when windows show start windows screen, select R for repairing and then enter 1 and password to go to c:\windows. Type FIXMBR to fix the unwanted entries other than the windows default mbr entries. Select yes if a warning message comes and then exit. Your problem would be getting solved. If you download, download from major geek instead of usual free download sites, which are carriers for these browser hijackers. Thank you and reply if the problem is solved. I used these methods to get rid of funmoods, blekko , incredible and babylon tool bars. I do not know how to refer my answers to this question and hence copied it. This will solve the problem toto

Hi, Well what about mbr and other registry entries.

@ AliceWyman & jraju In regards to your directions, neither provided works.

Starting with AliceWyman, if you read my original post, you will know that I already followed those directions, and they are a failure.

Moving onto jraju's comment, not only did I follow the regedit method, after going through regedit, I ran the search again (which, as you might be able to assume, came up clean), followed by rebooting my computer. Even doing all this proved a failure, as Babylon is STILL hijacking Firefox. I'm guessing that the ONLY reason Babylon got de-listed as "malware" is because they MUST have paid off the various companies producing anti-virus/malware software to remove them from being listed as such. That's the only logical reason I can come up with as to why they would get de-listed.

Hi, Have you removed entries in mbr as suggested by me.panther6834. You have not written anything about it. If it is in mbr then also the problem would be there. Leave alone , babylon there are numerous such things , like incredible toolbar, funmoods etc. They not only dent your registry but also the mbr. Moreover , do these in safe mode after disabling system monitoring. That was i got rid of this browser hijack. Hope at lease this solves your problem.

Panther, I have another idea. I think these settings could be coming from a file called user.js.

If about:config entries are still not resetting even after you have removed the malware, I believe it is because those entries are in a user.js file. This file is designed to allow users to "lock" preferences.

To remove the user.js file:
Firefox button > Help > Troubleshooting Information
Click the Show Folder button

See this article for a screenshot to help you:
Accessing the Troubleshooting Information page

Then close Firefox. Open user.js in notepad. Delete the entries you don't want, or delete the user.js file if you didn't create it.

Open prefs.js in notepad. Delete the entries that were identical to the ones you saw in user.js. Reopen Firefox and those should be reset to their defaults.

After trying several possible solutions, including making repairs to the MBR & Registry, and all of them (as previously mentioned) failing, I was finally able (so far, and hoping & praying it remains this way) to remove the offending malware from Firefox (and hopefully the computer, as a whole. Unfortunately, doing so ended up being more convoluted, and time-consuming, than it should have been. This is what was involved:

First, I, once again, performed all the steps directly related to Firefox, but instead of restarting Firefox, I shut it down after performing the steps. Next, I, again, went through the Registry, removing everything with the word "babylon" in it (except for entries with "HTML" immediately following "babylon", as they refused to be deleted...but I'll get to that in a second). After this, I uninstalled Firefox, followed by rebooting the computer, and performing a 'System Repair', which restores the MBR, and fixes any errors in the Registry. After this, I reinstalled Firefox, and reinstalled all of my plug-ins, with one exception, as I noticed its install date was the same day babylon infected my computer. The only thing I know with 100% certainty is that, so far, my system appears to be free of this offensive malware. The only downside was that all of my search engines (Google, Amazon, Wikipedia, plus the others (including the babylon search engine), as installed, were gone, and I had to manually reinstall them (in this case, only Google & Amazon).

Hi, Glad that problem has gone. But in an answer to the question, I received so call removal instructions from Babylon ltd itself. I replied that why in the first instance, the tool bar was allowed to penetrate system registries which is against the code for download sites. I received reply, that from this year, they will not inject anything without users approval. If i could give a link, i will do so in due course of time. I sincerly advise, users to avoid such sites, which injects these parasites, pseudo named viruses, and download from the best, major geek com

@ jraju

I understand that the removal instructions you posted were received by you from Babylon LTD, themselves. I never disputed this. What I was saying is that the instructions they provided do not, in fact, work...at least not in all cases. This is not to say that they might not work for some, as they might...but, as with what happened with my system, they do not always work. As for the latter part of your last reply...that "they will not inject anything without users approval", this is, unfortunately, false. Yes, your system probably asks for your approval to install something which you are wanting to install, but, for lack of a better way of putting it, the Babylon malware "hitches a ride" into your system (which is why it's malware) WITHOUT your approval.

As for your final suggestion...that of avoiding sites that install malware on systems, this is, unfortunately, not a logical statement, as it's impossible to know, in advance, all of the sites that could cause this problem. The number of worldwide websites grows at a rate in the tens-of-thousands each and every day. Before you compiled a list, it would already be outdated, as I can (virtually) guarantee there would be dozens (possibly hundreds, or thousands) of new sites with malware ready to find its way into your computer. For every person writing code to combat viruses, worms, trojan horses, malware, etc, there is at least one person...and probably more...writing new virus/worm/trojan horse/malware code to cause problems. It's a battle that started the day the first virus was written....and it will remain a never-ending battle.

https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/938487?esab=a&s=&r=1&as=s please see this thread. I have not suggested to use my method alone, because, each operating system, antivirus programs are different. I was the victim of this browser hijack, and believe me, even in my seach engine the babylon tool bar was greyed so that i could not do anything. I surfed thro the net mcafee has given suggestion for funmoods , which i applied for this browser hijack also. And it worked for me. The virus may come and go, but the system has to go on for ever ...

I re-started my windows 7 in safe mode and went to regedit. But when I search for babylon*.* nothing shows up. However when I launch Firefox or IE both, I see the babylon search displayed on the Tab bar. When I create a new tab, instead of going to a blank page or google it goes to babylon search.

http://home.mcafee.com/virusinfo/virusprofile.aspx?key=1063106#none is a sample way of clearing the browser hijack. By reading the overview, virus characteristics, and removal guide you may be able to note that this is not a virus, but much more harmful than that in it that it steals your registry entries, making a dent in to it. The point is how those are making temporary folders and then erasing, and how it dents the registry etc.. By cleaning the mbr as given in the article would definitely get rid of this monstrous hijack. First of all disable system monitoring, and then remove as advised. I have given my views on these kind of toolbar and if it is helpful, thank not me , god.ok. The link is for funmoods, you have to go to regedit, and then edit menu, find the words and press f3 to find similar entries to delete those entries and not in search box. Hope it helps you
