Firefox 3.6.28 is no longer receiving security updates, so over time, it will be increasingly likely that your browser could be used to penetrate your system, in addition to giving up browser-based information such as history, bookmarks, and saved logins. That's the main reason for urging users of older versions to upgrade.

Saying security updates are critical are like saying macs don't get viruses. It isn't technically true.

Lets imagine, for one second, that I am not a Computer Science major, and that I have this lapse of judgment where an ad on the internet that somehow, doesn't get blocked by ABP advertises free money, and I click on it. And let's assume that I don't spot the glaringly obvious fake site set up like paypal/whatever. And let's again assume that I don't check the Verisign information at the top of the page, nor see that the site is paypal.lolvirus.com. I can still transfer all of my data off of my computer, and wipe it.

So please, don't assume I'm dumb, and don't know what ****** I'm doing. I know it doesn't receive security updates, and I also know that these updates are for people who DON'T know what they are doing, and that is why I am seeing if someone like-minded to me wrote an addon for Firefox to get around this annoyance so that I don't have to write it myself.

Actually, that is not the full story. Malware is injected into reputable websites all the time, and can trigger software errors that allow automatic execution of attack code by infiltrating the host program's address space (e.g., buffer overflows). In the past, attacks have been launched through flaws in rendering of JPEGs, among other automatic browser behaviors. Windows 7's DEP can protect you from some of these attacks, but no one believes that DEP is foolproof.

I applaud you for being security conscious and actively minimizing your risk, but practicing cautious computing is not the same as having no risk.

Edit: I should add that I'm not trying to talk you out of what you want to do, but providing more complete information for others who read this thread in the future and might not be as savvy as you.

Eh, I just prioritize comfortable internet browsing over security, because I can compensate for security, but short of doing the coding myself, I can't compensate for how they code Firefox, but rather try and stay on the version I am most comfortable with and that is the most compatible with my add-ons.

In the version of Firefox I'm using (14) there is an option in the preferences to check for updates, and one of the options is to "Never check for updates". I assume there's an equivalent option in the version of Firefox you're using (I don't have it on hand, so I can't check myself); you could try selecting that option if you like.

Damn...nice find. I searched FF settings and found one that auto-checks FF...now let's just see if it stops sending me pop-ups.

Yep...after a long search through the settings, i found where it checks for FF updates and unchecked it...no more annoying popups! Thanks Kgupta!

I like updates, I just couldn't stand the notification every time. If that's the problem, there's a setting in about:config - startup.homepage_override_url - set that to ignore. and startup.homepage_welcome_url - ignore

If you search about:config for "update" you'll find a ton of update options. If you're not sure, google each, to find the best solutions.

I have NO intention of updating my 3.6.26 !! It's exactly what I want and with tabs not available it's really great !! Tell Google to bloody shut up !!
