Is there a way to block add-ons from being installed in Firefox, even add-ons coming from 3rd party sites?

I work in a small call center and I have been working on trying to convince IT and management to use Firefox on the computers on the call floor. The main issue I have been having in convincing them, is that you can't block add-ons and things like that as easily as in IE. I thought I had it with blocking addons.mozilla.org, which wouldn't allow access to Mozilla's add-on site. However, with that, techs would still be able to go to 3rd party sites, generally the creators of the add-ons, and download them there. Anybody have any ideas on how to stop this?

Sure and I would have to assume they know this, they just don't want to deal with it. A simplistic way would be with Profiles - Where Firefox stores your bookmarks, passwords and other user data the profile can be kept on the server and monitored(hince more work for IT). Or leave the profile local and ping it for changes to "addons.sqlite" file.

You can configure Firefox settings to notify you before installing an add-on.

-> click Firefox button and click Options (or Tools Menu -> Options)

  • Security panel -> place Checkmark on Warn me when websites try to install add-ons -> click Exceptions button -> click Remove All Sites button and click OK
  • click OK on Options window

Check and tell if its working.
