Firefox auto updated after a restart of my computer, now I can't get to any website at all using Firefox or IE9. The pages just keep loading indefinitely.

When I go to open Firefox it loads the Firefox Google homepage but I can't search anything or go anywhere else from there.

When I open IE9, the homepage doesn't load at all.

I've disabled my firewall and confirmed it wasn't the issue.

I find a good test is to see if your Internet connection is actually up. Ping Google to do this, using the following command:

ping www.google.com

For detailed instructions on how to ping a website from Windows, see here.

If you are able to successfully ping Google then we know you Internet connection is up and Firefox may be experiencing a problem. On the other hand if you are unable to ping Google, then you have a network connection issue rather than a Firefox issue.

Either way, let us know how you get on.

Not to sound like an ingrate, but I've done that, I did that a while ago, but I understand simple things like that can go unchecked though and I've done a bit of troubleshooting and have managed to get back out on the internet using IE9.

I've uninstalled the following in the following order:

Firefox latest version (6.0.1 I believe) Microsoft Silverlight Java Update 26 Avast Antivirus(It wouldn't run for some reason bad or outdated installer)

After those were uninstalled I could get out to the web. When I completed uninstalling Avast it took me to a web survey as to why I was uninstalling so I tried to hit Google, Facebook, Gmail, etc and it let me.

I then uninstalled Java update 18, just a hunch but I think it has to do with the Java update 26, or maybe because I had 2 versions installed at the same time.

I haven't reinstalled any Java yet.

You don't need my help you doing alright by yourself! :)

Seriously, from what you have said I suspect your antivirus software may be the cause of the problem. Please see the support article Firefox can't load websites but other browsers can, specifically the section Internet Security software blocking Firefox.

Silverlight and Java should not be a problem and you can have multiple versions of Java on your computer at any one time.

Let us know how you get on.

Didn't mean to be rude I didn't realize you weren't replying to me specifically!

Well........I reinstalled Firefox again after I got out to the web, reinstalled Silverlight, reinstalled Avast Antivirus.

Went out to the internet and surfed a bit, then installed Java update 27, restarted my machine and now I can't get out to the internet again on IE9 or Firefox....

I uninstalled Java, restarted my machine and can now get out to the web.

Pretty sure it's Java.

But I'm not 100% sure, I'm have a feeling it's either my Avast AV or Java, but Avast is enabled and I can get out, I disabled and could still get out, then re-enabled and it still lets me out to the web so I'm not sure.

No worries, you weren't rude.

Did you try getting back on the Internet using Firefox between reinstalling each piece of software?

It's a bit labour intensive, but I advise you:

  1. Uninstall Silverlight, Java and Avast Antivirus as you did before.
  2. Test whether you can get on the Internet using Firefox. If not, stop at this point and let me know.
  3. Install Silverlight
  4. Test whether you can get on the Internet using Firefox. If not, stop at this point and let me know.
  5. Install Java
  6. Test whether you can get on the Internet using Firefox. If not, stop at this point and let me know.
  7. Install Avast Antivirus
  8. Test whether you can get on the Internet using Firefox.

Let me know the outcome.

It seems you may be right, I don't have Java installed at all and couldn't get out to the web for some reason.

Amongst the possible suspects were Avast and Silverlight, I disabled all the Avast shields and managed to get out to the web.

Never had this issue before with Avast.

Please see the link here from the Avast forum.

Also, while your particular antivirus software is not listed in the following article, it might still be worth a read to get an idea of how to configure your antivirus software to work well with Firefox - see the support article Fix problems connecting to websites after updating Firefox.

I think the following two points are particularly important:

  1. Make sure your Internet security software is up-to-date (i.e. you are running the latest version).
  2. Remove Firefox from your program's list of trusted or recognized programs, then add it back.

Again, let us know how you get on.
