Add-ons stuck at the beginning of install process

I just updated from Firefox 3.6 to 5.0.1. All of my extensions completely disappeared. I'm trying to reinstall the ones I really need. The three I've tried so far (FireFTP, Web Developer, and Colorzilla) download, start to install, get about 2% into the install process, then just sit there. If I close Firefox, the installations disappear. When I restart Firefox and try again to install the extensions, the same thing happens -- they get stuck in the install process.
