Hi, spoke with 3 techs today and found no solution to the problem. I even went as far as purchasing the Malwareby Anti_malware and found NO problems. I still cannot open firefox when clicking on the icon. It has been un-installed and re-installed.

please email me if there is a solution

Cor-el has already given the way to the file (I pronounced it like on Windows XP; cor-el noticed that you are on Vista and gave correct path)

C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox

Now get profiles.ini file (if there is none, create a new text document and rename it to profiles.ini), open it with notepad and put into it the lines

[[General] StartWithLastProfile=1

[[Profile0] Name=default IsRelative=1 Path=Profiles/zft4mn0r.default Default=1

Create folders

C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles

and

C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\zft4mn0r.default

Now try running Firefox in Safe Mode:

there should be a shortcut: Start->Programs->Mozilla Firefox->Mozilla Firefox(Safe Mode)

If this shortcut is missing, you can start in Safe Mode by going to "Start Search" and entering, one of these:

       * firefox -safe-mode
       * "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe" -safe-mode

Does it help anything?

Well... Try installing a portable Firefox somewhere on the computer; by definition of portable, it should run without any problems. http://portableapps.com/apps/internet/firefox_portable

It's a bug.

Did you try running it in Safe Mode?

Start->Programs->Mozilla Firefox-> Mozilla Firefox (Safe Mode)

Have you tried to create a new profile?

The techs can help you to do so if you haven't yet.

Does it give an error message when you click the icon?

Have you checked hard drive for errors/bad sectors/etc?

Will not run in safe mode. When I try to create a new profile I immediately get Mozilla Crash reporter. Error message is just numbers: The last one was Crash ID: bp-19fb876f-24cf-41e8-9a80-6ff842100504. This is from crash reporter.

Hard drive for errors/bad sectors? I think I did this by ...this is recalling from memory. I have done research from forums. chkdsk or something like that on c:windows/windows 32 and did come up with corrupt files that couldn't be repair. I have no idea how to repair this.

Can you tell me how to check for hard drive for errors/bad sectors and we will go from there?

Thanks Pat

Here is your crash report:

http://crash-stats.mozilla.com/report.../19fb876f-24cf-41e8-9a80-6ff842100504

To check and repair disk,

open (as administrator, not as limited user) command window (Programs->Accessories->Command Prompt) (black window with white letters),

type "chkdsk /f /r" (without quotes) and hit Enter.

Then (after its message that it cannot check disk which is used by system now, and can do it next time computer restarts, if you want it so)

type Y (it stands for yes) and hit Enter again.

Then restart computer.

When you restart computer, the disk check will start soon (after shut down, before start up). It will take several hours of white letters appearing on blue screen with information about its progress.

It can be that after check disk Firefox still will not run (if some files were damaged in such a way that chkdsk couldn't guess what information was in them and replaced it with blank zeros). So uninstall and reinstall Firefox again.

If your car collides with something and parts are destroyed, you can guess their color from neighboring regions. Chkdsk cannot. It just moves files away from dangerous permanently damaged sectors, recovering all the information which can be read and replacing unknown information with zeros.

Don't be afraid. I have just had a hard drive failure (three days of chkdsk, backuping, moving to new hard drive), but all the files were safely moved from the old drive to the new one, and everything works. Until now, only Adobe Reader required installation repair, and it was done in minutes.

I did the above as suggested by wikiwide. Must confess didn't noticed if there were any problems as the computer was restarting before I noticed the chkdsk was completed.

Un-installed and Re-installed Firefox.

when I go to the start and search and type in firefox.exe -profile manager I get the crash reported immediately. This is the same when I do it at run.

So same problems. will not open. Thanks Pat

I did the above as requested.

Still get crash reporter as soon as I try to search or run firefox.exe - profile manager

Same problem

Thanks

Sorry for late reply. It was night in my timezone.

What are the Crash IDs of Firefox now when it crashes with and without profile manager?

As disk is checked and Firefox is uninstalled and reinstalled, it isn't a problem of corrupted Firefox program files.

What about finding folder

C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox

and renaming it? Maybe, profiles.ini is corrupted, because it is read any case, whether you start Firefox with profile manager or without. If the folder will be renamed, Firefox will have to create it anew, with new files.

The crash report also mentions kernel32.dll and ntdll.dll. Any of them might be corrupted, so if the above didn't help, ask the techs to test whether they are corrupted or not. But they are system files, and your system starts all-right, so it's hardly the case.

P.S. Clean reinstall of OS would solve the problem evidently. Then the problem is solvable. Then it can be solved without OS reinstall. Right?

Make sure that you allow Firefox in your firewall.

Remove all rules for Firefox from the permissions list in the firewall and let your firewall ask again for permission to get full unrestricted access to internet for Firefox. See Configure firewalls so that Firefox can access the Internet and http://kb.mozillazine.org/Firewalls .......... See also http://kb.mozillazine.org/Browser_will_not_start_up

cor-el thanks for the sites. I have tried to find where my firefall is located but can not. I run avira Antivir Personal.

Thanks Pat

wikiwide: I cannot find this file. Still searching for it.

C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox

Do you know how to test those files? The crash report also mentions kernel32.dll and ntdll.dll.

Thanks Pat

Crash ID: bp-55fdf52f-ac03-4ff8-a6a1-9f57c2100505

This is the last crash Id. I get it when I go to run and type firefox.exe - profile manager

Thanks everyone

Try to delete the Mozilla/Firefox folder: C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox

You can do a disk check with the chkdsk.exe program. If you run the chkdsk.exe program from a cmd.exe Command window then you can read the response from the chkdsk.exe program. Open a cmd.exe window: Start > Run: cmd.exe <press Enter> At the command prompt (>) type or Copy&Paste: chkdsk.exe /f /r <press Enter> (put a space before /f and /r) If you get something like: Would you like to schedule this volume to be checked the next time the system restarts? y/n then answer the question with "Y'"' and close all programs and reboot the computer.

Did delete the appdata/roaming/firefox. Still same problem - can not open the icon.

BUT now when I double click the icon I get the crash reporter immediately. I was not getting that before.

Also had already run the chkdsk before.

Thanks

Latest crash report after deleting Crash ID: bp-cc63ba3d-d3d4-409f-9a45-702722100506

I have completed all requests except doing the reinstalling of OS. Will just call it quits and use google chrome.

It's a bug.

  1. i think this problem often occurs because of registry errors with the fonts... this solution fixes that.
  2. try going to fonts in control panel and restoring/reinstalling them
  3. If you still can't access the control panel font settings...
  4. go here: \\%COMPUTERNAME%\C$\Windows\Fonts (replacing %computername% with your computername).
  5. then hit ctrl+a to select all the fonts.
  6. once they're all selected right click and select "install".
  7. when the dialogue box pops up saying that "[such and such] font is already installed, would you like to reinstall it?" click the box for "do this for all current items", and hit "yes"
  8. reboot (just for grins), and you should be good to go
