I am not using chrome what chrome menu are you talking about

Hi Mark, as a Windows user, this might work differently for me, but in case the sequence of events is similar on Mac, here's my experience for comparison. I tested in two different profiles:

Regular profile (heavily customized)

I have a Primary Password set (Use a Primary Password to protect stored logins and passwords). After clicking the red Export... button in the little warning panel, Firefox displays the Primary Password dialog. After I submit that, a Save As window pops up to choose where to save the file.

Test profile (mostly default settings)

I do not have a Primary Password set. After clicking the red Export... button in the little warning panel, a Windows dialog displays to enter my Windows login. After I submit that, a Save As window pops up to choose where to save the file.

Are you getting either of those password prompts?

I dont have a primary password, I get the warning pop up an dI agree then it goes away and I dont get the next screen to save as pop window

Do other interactions with the file system work normally? For example:

  • right-click (Ctrl+click) an image > Save Image As...
  • (menu bar) File > Save Page As...

If you open the Web Console in the lower part of the Passwords page (Command+Alt+K) and then try the export again, are there any error messages displayed in the console during that process?

pressed option command k for mac but nothing listed, I am able to export on my MacBook Air using firefox just not my IMac desktop

Version 108.0 released today. After your Firefox gets the update, let us know whether there is any improvement.

I updated to the latest version 108 and still unable to save as when I try to export passwords and logins on my iMac but it allows me to do save as on my MacBook Air, dont understand what the issue is

You can set signon.debug = true on the about:config page. You can start the export/import and check the Browser Console for login related messages. You can clear the messages beforehand and only enable Errors and Warnings, hidden items may have an item count appended. Do not forget to reset signon.debug to false after you are done testing.

I changed it to true and still nothing happens

The Browser Console is the one that pops up in its own window when you press Command+Shift+J. Open that, click the trash can upper left to clear the messages, then switch windows and try the export, then check back in the console for any specific messages related to that action.

You are looking at the right console (Browser Console and not the Web Console) ?

I think I have a similar problem.

I'm on 108.0.1 with Windows 10 on a home computer. I do not have a primary password set.

I just went through the steps to save my logins, but after I pass the red warning screen I get a screen that shows my the system name of my computer and tells me "To export your logins, enter your Windows login credentials." What is that? My MS ID? A Firefox primary password for logins that I never set?

Please advise. I exported my logins to a csv file without difficulty a few months (and Firefox updates) ago, and need to do so again.

I assume it is your Windows password, the one you need to use to sign in to Windows. For a brief period of time, this feature was enabled but then it was subsequently disabled. If you do not want your Windows password to be required to view or export passwords, check this preference:

(1) In a new tab, type or paste about:config in the address bar and press Enter/Return. Click the button accepting the risk.

More info on about:config: Configuration Editor for Firefox. The moderators would like us to remind you that changes made through this back door aren't fully supported and aren't guaranteed to continue working in the future. Since we are restoring the default, I feel comfortable mentioning it.

(2) In the search box in the page, type or paste os-auth and pause while the list is filtered

(3) If the signon.management.page.os-auth.enabled preference is set to true, double-click it (or click the toggle button on the right end of the row) to restore the default value of false

Thanks for the advice. But I found the signon ... enabled preference set to false.

Hmm, okay, apparently you can only bypass this OS authentication dialog when you export by setting a Primary Password, which is why I always see that dialog when I export logins. Apparently this has been the behavior since Firefox 79.

In case you need to set a primary password on this installation (it doesn't sync): Use a Primary Password to protect stored logins and passwords.
