Specific fields not allowing paste

For the past year or so i have run into certain fields that will not accept a paste, whether by right click or Ctrl-v, and the behavior is consistent every time i try on that specific website. For example, a payment section of our utilities where though i can Ctrl-v my routing number (also it can be filled by what i can describe as a saved autofill - when you click in the field and the entry appears just below), but i can not paste my account number into the account space by either method (right click or Ctrl-v - nor does anything show below the field when one clicks in it).

I have always presumed that this is an intended behavior by whomever coded the webpage for security, but i just plain old find it annoying. Any chance i am correct in that it is a coding option these days, and if so, is there any way to break it?

Thank you!

Okay, for testing purposes:

(1) In a new tab, type or paste about:config in the address bar and press Enter/Return. Click the button accepting the risk.

More info on about:config: Configuration Editor for Firefox. The moderators would like us to remind you that changes made through this back door aren't fully supported and aren't guaranteed to continue working in the future. This change causes problems on some sites such as Facebook.

(2) In the search box in the page, type or paste dom.event.clipboardevents.enabled and pause while the list is filtered

(3) Double-click the preference to switch the value from true (sites can detect cut/copy/paste) to false (sites cannot detect cut/copy/paste). Double-click again to switch back. (Or there is a "toggle" button at the right end of the row.)

If you click in the field and type a space, can you paste after that? Just checking whether some kind of text entry is needed first.

Firefox does have a hidden setting to prevent sites from detecting cut/copy/paste. However, users who enable it typically report problems pasting in fancy editors like email, Facebook comments, Reddit, etc. Unfortunately, it's not a site-specific setting.

I am looking forward to giving it a try! Unfortunately, it will have to wait for my next payment, but on the bright side, i made this last payment late so it shouldn't be long-

Thank you, though the first attempt of typing a space (or other characters) didn't work, the second certainly did. Now, if i understand you correctly, i just have to be aware that i might have some strange behaviors in editor boxes at some other sites, so i should keep aware of this change.

Much appreciate the help!

Yes, any site which has more than basic forms could behave weirdly.

Try keyboard shortcuts in case the buttons on the webpage or other methods aren't working.

  • Copy: Ctrl+C or Ctrl+Insert (Mac: Command+C)
  • Paste: Ctrl+V or Shift+Insert (Mac: Command+V)
  • Cut: Ctrl+X or Shift+Delete (Mac: Command+X)
