Firefox Release 97 8th Feb Completely Broken on My System

Long story short, today I received v97. Firefox would no longer open websites. Settings would not open. about:config would not open. Tried killing my profiles. Complete clean installs. None of it worked. Something is 100% wrong with v97, at least for my system. I can install 94 no problem. 96.0.3 no problem. As soon as 97 hits, everything breaks.

I love firefox and would love to troubleshoot the issue, but it's not possible. Most of the time, v97 won't even open, so launching the troubleshooter mode is impossible. And if it does open, selecting troubleshooter results in a crash.

No idea if any of this is helpful, but this is what one of them spat out:

Users with Windows 10 or 11, and Webroot security software, are encountering this problem with 64-bit Firefox 97.

People are working with Webroot to issue an update. Meanwhile:

A couple users confirmed that uninstalling and reinstalling WebRoot resolved the issue.

If you can't do that or it doesn't work, several other users confirmed that one temporary workaround is to run Firefox 97 in backwards compatibility mode. Here is how you would set that up:

(1) Open the Properties dialog for your Firefox shortcut. Either:

  • right-click a Desktop shortcut, then click Properties
  • right-click a pinned Taskbar icon, then right-click the Firefox (or Mozilla Firefox) item, then click Properties

(2) Switch to the Compatibility tab

(3) Check the box for "Run this program in compatibility mode for"

(4) If the selector for that option is not set on Windows 8, switch it to Windows 8

(5) Click OK and then start Firefox (if Firefox won't start because it is already running, you might need to restart Windows)

As a result of this change, you may notice that some Windows 10-specific features and styling are disabled. However, I am not aware of any major changes. If you experiment with this, let us know your experience.

I do have webroot, but I am unable to uninstall it because of our security policies.

I will attempt an install of 97 in a separate location, and run it in compatibility mode and report back, on Monday probably.

Realistically though, Firefox should roll back this bad update.

You do not need to reinstall Firefox 97 to change the compatibility option, it's just a change to how the application starts made through its shortcut.
