Now that I have removed adobe flash player, videos will no longer play. What can I do...?

I have to say that this has been the most frustrating issue that I have been unable to find any kind of help with.

I am running W7 on this laptop (I do not know more than that), even W10 on my desktop, both with the most updated version of mozilla.

I have removed the adobe flash player, and now I cannot get any videos to play, like on CNN and other various sites. I just get the spinning wheel of nothing. It seems that only you tube is working, barely.

Am I missing something, is this open html5 crap supposed to just take over and everything will be okay.

Maybe someone, somewhere can post a layman's explanation on what is going on. If there are issues, how to fix them. I don't need anymore information telling me how to remove because it is dead. What I need is what is replacing it, how does it work, and where and what can I do to fix issues.

Searching for help here on this subject is just tedious. I get over 3000 replies, or what ever they are called here, but just nothing on an explanation of what is changed and or how it works, more like doesn't work.

What do I need to do in order to be able to watch/play videos online.

Any help would be very, very much appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

There aren't many sites that use the Flash player to play videos, so this is likely caused by something else like a content blocking extension.

If you use extensions ("3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Extensions) that can block content (Adblock Plus, NoScript, DuckDuckGo PE, Disconnect, Ghostery, Privacy Badger, uBlock Origin) always make sure such extensions do not block content.

Firefox shows a purple shield instead of a gray shield at the left end of the location/address bar in case Enhanced Tracking Protection is blocking content. You can click shield icon for more detail and possibly disable the protection. You can check the Web Console for messages about blocked content.

Thanks, but that is a big huge no go.

With everything turned off, I still don't get any video playback.

I got a broken up, staled, stopping, restarting voice track, but no video.

All I have for extensions are an ad blocker and a pop up blocker.

Even with Enhanced Tracking Protection on "standard", I get nothing but a broken audio track.

Still just get the spinning wheel of nothing happening.

Any help will be very much appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Looks like a fail for mozilla..?

Hmm, when I visit https://html5test.com/ in my Firefox, it shows 514 out of 555, but the Audio and Video sections are the same.

To see whether this is likely to be setting/add-on issue versus a system issue, you could try:

New Profile Test

This takes about 3 minutes, plus the time to test your problem site(s).

Inside Firefox, type or paste about:profiles in the address bar and press Enter/Return to load it.

Take a quick glance at the page and make a mental note of which Profile has this notation: This is the profile in use and it cannot be deleted. That is your current default profile.

Click the "Create a New Profile" button, then click Next. Assign a name like Jan2021, ignore the option to relocate the profile folder, and click the Finish button.

Firefox will switch your default profile to the new one, so click the Set as Default Profile button for your regular one to avoid an unwanted surprise at your next startup.

Scroll down to Jan2021 and click its Launch profile in new browser button.

Firefox should open a new window that looks like a brand new, uncustomized installation. (Your existing Firefox window(s) should not be affected.) Please ignore any tabs enticing you to connect to a Sync account or to activate extensions found on your system to get a clean test.

Do the problem site(s) work any better in the new profile?

When you are done with the experiment, you can close the extra window without affecting your regular Firefox profile. (Jan2021 will remain available for future testing.)

Okay, interesting. Before I go on and test this, to start, it shows that I have two profiles, one as the:

"Profile: default-release This is the profile in use and it cannot be deleted." then "default profile: yes"

..the other shows:

"Profile: default" then "default profile: no"

..is this correct? should I have two profiles like this...?

Thanks in advance.

On my laptop (using wifi) I only have the one cannot be deleted profile..?

This is the computer that I am having the worst issues with.

My desktop (not using wifi) is stop and start, but will eventually play on a test this morning.

...?

Firefox ignores extra profiles unless you intentionally launch one of them, so I wouldn't worry about the other "default" profile. Perhaps it is a time capsule from 2018?

Same issue, using the same web page, video will not play, it just the same spinning wheel of nothing happening.

Could you check for messages in Firefox's Web Console. You can open the Web Console in the lower part of the tab using either:

  • "3-bar" menu button > Web Developer > Web Console
  • (menu bar) Tools > Web Developer > Web Console
  • (Windows) Ctrl+Shift+k

Then reload the page (in the upper part of the same tab) and watch for error messages. Anything that sounds like it could be relevant?

You probably need to click the video once or twice (depending on whether it autoplays and to override the autoplay block). Any new messages after that?

There are massive amounts of all sort of failures and warnings that are showing under the 'console' tab.

I would copy and past them here, but I am unsure if it would show anything that is of a personal nature. keep in mind this is on any page that I visit, showing warnings and failures.

Yes, there usually are a lot of messages. Do any of them seem to refer to media, or do any of them show specifically when you start the player?

Since I don't know how to re-create the problem, I don't know what the error messages will be. We're just hoping for some clues here.

Boot the computer in Windows Safe mode with network support to see if that has effect in case security software is causing problems.

I can copy and paste the list, but that goes back to a previous question, will that show any sort of personal information that I don't want the world to see..?

Tell me how you want to see it, and I will pass it all along, so you can vivisect it as you please.

Thanks in advance.

I don't know what personal information could appear in the list. Probably you will notice anything in plain text, and if you think there is a code that could be identifying, you could edit it (replace with X characters, etc.)

Unfortunately that is above my area of knowledge. I build all my own computers, as I know hardware but I cannot do anything with coding. I would not have any idea what is personal or not.

Thoughts..?

I think you would do it the same way I would: look at what each line says and see whether it looks like it identifies you in some way.

Well, while I do appreciate the help, that is just not going to work.

As I said, I know nothing about coding. I could be giving away the secret on how to turn lead into gold and I would never know it.

It is like trying to read Chinese, I would not know what is what, unless I saw my name in there somewhere.

I can easily enough send you a copy of what I am seeing, but don't ask me to go through it and take out any revealing information, because I wouldn't even know where to begin as to what I am looking at.

To me, it is gibberish..

So, what next then..?

Still having significant issues with this..

Even worse, pictures not loading, webpages stuck that will not load, it doesn't matter which site I go to.

Is anyone working on a fix..?

Anyone, anyone..?
