Where are favorites on current version (recent versions) for Mac

Where are the favorites pages in recent versions of Firefox for mac? I go to one URL dozens a day and have to type in the full address each time. If this particular URL worked in other browsers I sure would use something else. I'm sure this is just something the I am overlooking but don't know what.

Replying to my own question. I maybe used the wrong term. If not favorites, I may be looking for the "frequently visited" sites. ehw3

Firefox has a Bookmarks Toolbar if you want one-click access to a commonly used URL:

Bookmarks Toolbar - Display your favorite websites at the top of the Firefox window

If you have not created a bookmark, when you are typing in the address bar, usually Firefox displays matches from your history in the drop-down as you type. Has that stopped working?

The old "Show History" button to list frequently visited sites was removed a long time ago. Currently, Firefox displays your Top Sites from the built-in Firefox Home / new tab page when you click the address bar.

To show frequently visited sites from history now, you can either:

  • type a space into the address bar
  • click the little clock icon at the bottom of the address drop-down

First, thank you very much for your prompt reply and your suggetsions. I installed(?) the Bookmark toolbar, which contains the Firefox icon followed by "Getting Started". When I start typing the URL and hit the first ".", a list of suggestions appears. When I get to the second ".", a suggestion appear for that. I will reread the getting started info and see if that helps.

I tried your suggestion about typing a space in address bar and clicking on the clock icon. When I do that I get the word, "History" highlighted in blue followed by a space. There is nothing else in the line. When I type the URL and click "Return" nothing happens.

Hmm, I wonder whether something is wrong with your history.

If you click the History menu, does it list recent website visits? Does Show All History show the list of pages you expect?

If Firefox has the history to show but isn't showing it on the drop-down, it's possible that History is turned off as a source of suggestions. This article has more information on the part of the Preferences page where you specify what to show in the drop-down:

Address bar autocomplete suggestions in Firefox

Something may be wrong. When I click on Show All History the popup window shows no entries.

Which is strange, because when i opened Firefox to reply to your post I typed "supp" of "support.mozilla.org" and the URL was autocompleted. So there is some history???

Thanks for the URL

In Preferences-->Home, do you have Top Sites checked?

To OBW47 Yes it is checked. I changed 1 row to 2 rows but see no difference. As previously mentioned if I start to enter support.mozilla.org I only need to type the first 4 letters and it autocompletes. But if I enter the URL I use the most it does not complete.

I hadn't paid attention, but when I typed a few addresses in (selected from my History), none of them autocompleted on my Mac, including your example.

Something may be wrong. When I click on Show All History the popup window shows no entries.

My listing also was blank when I chose Show All History. However, clicking on the History folder (upper left) displayed various options for displaying different timeframes.

Another thought, in the Home section of Preferences, you might also want to select Highlights, if you haven't.

Nothing appears when I click on History in the section on the left which also includes Bookmarks and "Synced Tabs". Highlights and all subheadings are checked in Preferences-> Home.

The "in address bar" autofill feature uses a different table from your regular browsing history (top level site addresses, without the full URLs). I wonder if your history got erased?! As you visit sites now, are new history entries saved?

Jscher2000: I had a problem a while back where typing in one URL led to a totally different site. Someone here suggested I delete cookies. Didn't think I deleted all of History but it is possible. You say it is a different History, but I don't know where it is so I don't know if the "new history entries" are saved. I have tried a few but when I reenter I have to enter the entire address - except for support.mozilla.org. All I have to type is "sup"

Jscher2000 I just looked at Preferences -> Privacy & Security -> and none of the boxes are checked. The top line is set to "Use custom settings for history" but it is not checked. I'm thinking I should set that top line for "Remember history" and check the box. The rest of that section looks like it applies to private browsing only.

The first box -- "Remember browsing and download history" -- definitely should be checked. If you change to "Remember history" that might happen automatically.

It appears that both "Remember history" and "Remember browsing and download history" both allow for autocomplete. I note that "Remember history" says it will remember your browsing, download, form and search history, while "Remember browsing and download history" apparently just remembers just those two and not form and search. The arrangements of the choices seems misleading in that it suggests there is a series of choices under "Always use private browsing mode. However its obvious that "Remember browsing and download history applies to standard(?) mode as well as private mode. So it looks like my issues have been resolved!!!
