I am using a personal home laptop and the checkbox next to the logins and passwords will not stay checked from one session to another. I am using Windows 10 and do not know how to make the checkbox stay checked.

Are you using any password add-ons/programs?

https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/how-to-fix-preferences-wont-save

Note: Some software, like Advanced SystemCare with Surfing Protection, can protect files in the Firefox profile folder against changes. If you have such software then check the settings or uninstall this software.

I already went to that link. Many of my preferences will save, but not that one. Firefox was already installed on this brand new laptop when I bought it brand new from best buy. I have reinstalled Firefox, and its still doing it. This is the only computer I've had where it will not leave that preference where I put it and I'm not sure why. I'm not using that particular program, and the password add on I am using is Mozilla's so I have my passwords no matter what device I am on. I recently had a six-month free subscription to Trend Micro that lapsed, as it came with the laptop and have put Avast on the computer.

You can't have multiple Password Managers enabled at the same time, so if you have others like RoboForm or Trend Micro Password Manager then the builtin Firefox Lockwise Password Manager will be disabled and the checkmark on "Ask to save logins and passwords for websites" is removed.

So, if I have "Password Protection" enabled in my antivirus program (currently Avast) that is what is changing the setting, then?

I don't know. Change the setting and see.

I turned off that option for an hour in the antivirus dashboard, and closed firefox for about four minutes. That was not what was doing it. When I opened firefox after those few minutes the checkbox was unchecked again

Thanks

I used Revo Uninstaller and uninstalled Firefox and all associated registry keys and files with that. I have reinstalled a clean brand new copy and it seems to be staying on the checkbox now....

Never did find out why it was doing that.

That was very good work. Well Done. Please flag your last post as Solved Problem as this can help others with similar problems.

I don't have the solved option since you checked it on your post, FredMcD. I think thats why I can't mark my post anyway.

Thanks

The problem came back about an hour later.... Not sure why

You can check if you have a user.js file in the profile folder to initialize prefs each time Firefox starts. The user.js file will only be present if you or other software has created this file and normally won't be present.

You can check its content with a text editor (right-click: "Open with"; do not double-click). The user.js file is read each time Firefox is started and initializes preferences to the value specified in this file, so preferences set via user.js can only be changed temporarily for the current session.

You can delete the user.js file if you didn't create this file yourself.

You can use the button on the "Help -> Troubleshooting Information" (about:support) page to go to the current Firefox profile folder or use the about:profiles page.

You can check the about:policies#active page to see whether policies are active (63+).
