All my Bookmarks and Tabs have vanished after the Firefox 82.0.3 update yesterday. Related? Searching for hours, including Firefox site and cannot find solution. I noticed 'Restore Previous Session' was recommended as a 'fix' at some links. Mine is grayed out...if that matters. I have VERY important bookmarks, including links related to Hurricane Sally destruction to my home. PLEASE HELP! I'm not very computer savvy, so 'instructions for dummies' would be helpful. PS...I was able to bookmark this page, but at least 100 bookmarks vanished. Tabs & Bookmarks are fine with Safari and Chrome. Unfortunately, I rarely used those and did not migrate most Bookmarks to them. Lesson learned. Thanks in advance John

I found another thread and got bits & pieces of info that may or may not restore the Bookmarks. CLICK: 1. Bookmarks 2.Show All Bookmarks 3. Click on Set of Arrows: Pointing up & Pointing Down. (Don't know what they are called...See Photo with Dates) 4. Choose: Restore or Backup? 5. Click on Restore and I see Dates with Number of Items. Right now I have 14 items that I think are Bookmarks added today. For November 5th I see 376 Items. If I click on the date a Drop-down window shows: Revert Bookmarks- This will replace all of your current bookmarks with the backup. Are you sure? (SEE PHOTO)

I want to be 100% sure that the 376 items are Bookmarks and not my searching History from the last few days, before I click. Anyone ever recovered their Bookmarks doing this?

What about the rest of your profile? Settings, bookmarks, history, passwords . . . .

Look on your desktop. Do you see a folder called; Old Firefox? Look inside. Look for the folder with the latest creation date.

Hi Fred, I forgot to mention, I'm using an iMac. I found a 'Old Firefox folder. All the info in it looks to be dated August 13, 2015. I 'think' everything else is working ok. Tabs has vanished before but it was an easy fix, but I don't remember what it was. This is the first time that my Favorites has vanished.

Also have this issue since I turned the computer on this morning.

  1. All history/bookmarks added during the last 2 years are gone. Older bookmarks still there.
  2. When I select to restore old bookmarks, it shows todays date and a date from 2018 - both have the same amount of bookmarked items.
  3. No Old firefox folder on my desktop

I typed about:profiles and it showed two profiles. I selected the second one called swiffer22ProfileTest, set it to default and then opened it. I restored old bookmarks to yesterdays date and recovered them. However after switching profiles, my homepage, history etc are still gone. I've only managed to recover my bookmarks.

I was reading on other posts to check for places.sqlite. I've found one in my swiffer22ProfileTest folder called places.sqlite.corrupt and it's dated around about when I shut down my PC last night - I wonder if this has anything to do with it?

swiffer22 You say that one profile is missing the bookmarks but is otherwise okay. And that a second profile has those bookmarks?

The places.sqlite file holds your History and Bookmarks. Copy the file from second profile to the first, overwriting the current file.

If you have sync, and there is a problem anywhere, Shut Down Sync Immediately On All Devices to prevent the problem from spreading. Once the problem is fixed, perform the same repair on all computers/profiles before using sync again.

[v57+] Places Maintenance is built into Firefox.

Type about:support<enter> in the address bar.

You will find Places Database near the bottom. Press the Verify Integrity button.

When done, copy and post the results here.

Correct.

So I copied places.sqlite from my profile with bookmarks to my "default" profile and the bookmarks appeared there. However, it doesn't show my browsing history prior to today, my homepage is removed, all of my logins are logged out (although the login details saved) and my addons were originally all un-enabled. I wonder if there's something else that's involved?

Thanks btw.

First, let's save your current bookmarks: Open the Bookmarks Manager; Press the Alt or F10 key to bring up the toolbar, and select Bookmarks. Hot key is <Control> (Mac=<Command>) <Shift> B.

Once the window is open, at the top of the page, press the button labeled Import and Backup. Select Export Bookmarks To HTML, and follow the prompts and save it to a HTML file. Copy the file to another computer/profile. Repeat the instructions above, BUT select Import Bookmarks From HTML.

https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/restore-bookmarks-from-backup-or-move-them

https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/recover-lost-or-missing-bookmarks

Mozilla search: Import {web link}

After saving your bookmarks to an HTML file, Use the Restore function to bring back the backup file.

If it contains what you want, Great. If it only has what is missing, use the instructions to restore the HTML backup file you just made. The two should be combined. Is everything okay?

FredmcD, Was that reply to me? If so, I'm not concerned about the 14 current bookmarks. I don't know what HTML means or HTML files are. I did a search for HTML files and got this: An HTML file is a text file containing small markup tags. Huh??? Again, I'm not real computer savvy.

The 14 bookmarks will be included in the 376 Items, if the 376 Items is referring to Bookmarks. I want to confirm that if I click Restore on the November 5th date (in my Screenshot), are those 376 Items my Bookmarks that have vanished...or is there a chance that the 376 Items are something else. I don't want to click Restore if that will wipe out the vanished Bookmarks.

An HTML file is basically a text file that can contain special coding, like bookmarks that can be clicked on like links.

I always use HTML files to backup my bookmarks because the other method sometimes corrupts the file. Also, the HTML can be read using any text viewer and can be imported into other browsers besides Firefox.

The restore would wipe out the current bookmarks but will not themselves be changed.

Not worried about current bookmarks from today. Do you think the 376 Items are my missing Bookmarks? If not certain, I will wait and call Apple tomorrow and see if they can offer advice. They may not offer help with Firefox, but sometimes the Apple Techs go above & beyond.

Thanks for the HTML file tip, although it is like another language to me. Hopefully I will not have to learn more about it:) I have never had to deal with this before. First time I ever looked at the F.F Library.

Go ahead with the restore. It should not hurt anything.

IT WORKED!!!!!!!!! Thanks for all the help. I'm gonna export all them to Safari & Chrome. Re-posting the steps in case others missed them earlier.

Forgot to mention that doing the Restore also returned my TABS and everything else like it was before the update. I may turn off the Automatic Updates after that fiasco.

I am glad to hear that your problem has been resolved. If you haven't already, please select the answer that solves the problem. This will help other users with similar problems find the solution.

This option was removed from Firefox Quantum.

How do you completely turn off update checks in Firefox v64? You can use a policies.json file to disable updates for all users. https://github.com/mozilla/policy-templates/blob/master/README.md or https://winaero.com/blog/disable-updates-firefox-63-above/

You can use a policies.json file in the distribution folder in the Firefox installation folder instead as also listed in the article, so no need to use GPO keys in the Windows Registry. • https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/customizing-firefox-using-policiesjson
