Duplicate bookmarks

Hello everyone!

I've been having problem with duplicating bookmarks ever since I started using Firefox a few months ago.

1) The browser does not notify me when I'm saving bookmark(s) I already have, (then forget days later).

Previous browsers I've used have the same issues.

2) When I change a bookmark's folder (for organizational purposes), it retains the book mark in both places.

I have duplicated the process many times, and it has, on the blue remove button, the number of
   duplicates (ie: 2 bookmarks).

I have tried the following:

1) Perusing Help/Community forums which don't seem to address the issue specifically, such as pointing to

sync settings (which don't apply to me, as i only have one device).

2) Trying various extensions that only seem to apply to earlier versions of Firefox (based on forum dates).

The question I have is:

Why isn't this something that is embedded into the browser itself instead of relying on extensions that may work, but have glitches unto themselves? It seems like a pretty easy bit of coding (based on people I know who are pretty savvy).

Here are my system specs:

HP ENVY Windows 10 Home 10.0.19041 Build 19041 (64 Bit) Firefox Version 78.0.2 (64-Bit)

Thanks in advance for your time & assistance!

Kurt

How are you creating these bookmarks ?
Are you possibly using Sync to sync bookmarks as this might be a cause for bookmarks to get corrupted ?

If the bookmarks star in the location bar is highlighted then the current URL is already bookmarked. If you would click the highlighted star in this case then you get the "Edit this Bookmark" dialog and you do not get a second bookmark. If you create a bookmark by dragging the tab to the Bookmarks Toolbar or to a bookmarks folder then you always create a new bookmark whether the star is highlighted or not and you can end up with duplicates. If you organize bookmarks and drag them from their current folder to another folder or use Cut/Paste then the bookmark should be moved properly and you shouldn't end up with duplicates.

You can check for issues caused by problems with the places.sqlite and favicons.sqlite databases in the Firefox profile folder.

  • use "Verify Integrity" button on the "Help -> Troubleshooting Information" (about:support) page

If errors are reported with "Verify Integrity", close and restart Firefox and retry.

Since this responder didn't appear to read my initial question completely and does not address my issue - I'm replying to the people out there for real help.

First - As I said, I DO NOT use Sync, as I only have one device.

Second - I use the star button in the toolbar (correctly). The duplicate does not show up highlighted, otherwise I wouldn't need to bookmark it, thus my problem. These bookmarks go in the same folder(s) as the original.

Looking forward to a helpful response!

Kurt

If the star button doesn't get highlighted then there is a difference between the URLs of those duplicates.
Some websites may redirect you and the link on a web page can end up on a different website, so you can compare both the link and the URL where you end up in the location bar.
