non functional Firefox Browser(one laptop only)

System: Windows 10 32-bit laptop

Problem: non-responsive UI on one laptop only. This includes inability to configure local options. nothing works. Menus drop down, but no matter what is selected, the selection does not highlight, menu hides normally but no action is taken by the browser

If I manually type in the url it sits there. no spinning cursor, nothing.

Browser does NOT crash... It simply sits there doing nothing. All other browsers work fine.

What I have done Restart the laptop Double check Firewall permissions Ran a scan before and after installation (0 threats found) Logged in as administrator as well as user account Ran performance monitor nothing alarming noted Uninstall and Reinstall. (Problem still exists)

I got it.....I was having a problem with my McAfee Firewall, so I disabled it on startup in task manager and reverted to (gasp!) Windows Defender. But apparently it knows better than I what I needed so it started up anyway, apparently they were fighting each other. Firefox is fully functional now. Thanks all for your suggestions.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode {web link}

A small dialog should appear. Click Start In Safe Mode (not Refresh). Is the problem still there?


Start your Computer in safe mode with network support. Then start Firefox. Try Secure websites. Is the problem still there?

I have also launched in safe mode, and run compatibility tester...it suggested use compatibility for Windows 8, so I tried that, and still the same issue. It is now returned to the state of no compatibilities checked. (I saw this suggestion in another thread of similar, but not quite same, symptoms.)

Okay, rebooted the laptop in Safe Mode with Network support and Firefox worked as it should. Was able to log in, Bookmarks synced, browsing no problem. But when I rebooted normal , back to same issue. So I've still got issues to resolve...not sure what would create a conflict with Firefox and not IE, Edge, or Chrome. RAM is at 27% utilization. Processor averages around 50%.

it will likely be caused by (fairly unusual - otherwise we'd be swamped with similar support requests) external software that somehow injects into and interacts with firefox - do you have any idea what on your system might be it?

it should be possible to work around the problem by going into the registry to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Mozilla\Firefox\Launcher and setting the value of "<path to firefox.exe>|Launcher" to "0".
