How can I revert back to an earlier version of Thunderbird

I was using two add-ons that were very critical to my work and now they are not compatible with68.3.1 (64-bit) which it automatically updated to when I rebooted my computer. How can I revert back to an earlier version that accepts those add-ons.

Also, how do I ensure that it does not automatically update again??

Check that the add-on is enabled under Tools/Add-ons/Extensions, and then right-click the icon in the status bar (see picture). If the status bar is hidden, enable it under View/Toolbars or AppMenu/Options.

I assume TB 68.3.1 WAS working OK for you and those extensions were marked as compatible with it? OK, here's what you'll do: First, disable automatic updates - so you get a CHOICE on updating - and not have it do so without your permission. Under the Thunderbird Menu choose Preferences Click on Advanced at the bottom of the left navigation pane Click on the Update tab at the top Under "Allow Thunderbird To:" click the "Check for Updates but let me choose ..." Radio Button at the bottom of the list Close the Preferences tab (See Screenshot - Below)

Then Quit Thunderbird.

Next, go get the Mac OS X Disk Image (.dmg) for TB 68.3.1 here: https://archive.mozilla.org/pub/thunderbird/releases/68.3.1/mac/en-US/Thunderbird%2068.3.1.dmg

Pop open the disk image. Drag and drop the older TB onto the Newer one and Replace it.

Hopefully your extensions will come back to life when you start version 68.3.1 up the next time ... let me know if they DO NOT.

Thank you so much for your help....I am not sure of the exact version I was using before it updated to 68.4.1, but till that update all my add-ons were working beautifully.

1: Ok I turned off the automatic updates.

2: I downloaded the 68.3.1 and dragged it into the Application folder and replaced the other one (i.e. 68.4.1)

3: Then when I went to reopen TB I got this message: see screenprint below.

4: At that point, I became hesitant as I do not want to lose / ruin any of my old info etc. Is this a concern, or should I just proceed ahead?

5: Kindly advise....thank you.

I see you have two choices: quit - or create a new profile. Choose Quit - we will make a Backup of what is LEFT of your (Perhaps Altered - perhaps not) Profile folder ... And THEN we will let it "Create a new Profile" and try to restore the information in the backup to the NEW Profile you'll create.

Here is how to COPY Your Profile somewhere safe ... the Messages should all still be in it: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/profiles-where-thunderbird-stores-user-data

We will have to be working with multiple profiles for a while while we sort the data's location out, so read this one also: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/using-multiple-profiles

No, that IS a Problem. Your extensions were probably the Old Kind that were not supported in newer versions of TB. Going back ONE Version is NOT going to help if that is the case ... you need to go Back to the version that WAS working for you. I can't help if it is so old you couldn't remember what version it WAS. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/unable-install-add-on-extension-theme-thunderbird Version 60 ruined all of the Extensions that WERE working up until that version ... did you have TB 58 installed?

There are two key Add-ons that I use. The profile switcher (to open and use multiple profiles at once) and X-notes ++. If those two things could work with 68.4.1 then I am fine keeping the latest version.

(A) My old profile switcher allowed me to use multiple profiles at once, while the new profile switcher for 68.4.1 would close the current profile when opening a new one. This is an inconvenience that I would like to correct.

(B) Just this moment I got an email from the developer of the X-note add-on. This is the absolutely critical add-on as I have thousands of these notes for archival purposes and as of now they are not accessible on 68.4.1 - but see what the developer just wrote me:

"The latest version is compatible with TB 68, but it seems that Thunderbird fails to automatically update the add-on in some cases. Please update manually by downloading the latest compatible version from the Mozilla add-ons page: https://addons.thunderbird.net/en-US/thunderbird/addon/xnotepp/"

Given this latest development, what do you suggest I do?

TB was doing regular updates so it was not very, very old, I believe they were working with the 68 series as per the developer's above info, just the latest update was not compatible....

Profile Switcher for TB 68.

Install XNote++ for TB 68 by right-clicking the green Download Now button, Save Link as..., download the xpi file, then in TB Tools/Add-ons/Extensions, click the gear icon next to the search box, Install Add-on from File, select the xpi file.

Ok thank you.....

What should I do about fact that I replaced TB 68.4.1 with 68.3.1 in the applications folder wherein now when I click on the TB icon I get this message - see below image.

Earlier this morning when I was using TB 68.4.1 then all my info was in tact only those two add-ons were not working, as they were not compatible.

But when I replaced TB 68.4.1 with 68.3.1 in hopes of going back to an earlier version compatible with those add-ons, then when I attempted to open the TB program I got this message (below). I just closed that message and have not since tried to open Thunderbird.

Should I replace TB 68.3.1 with TB 68.4.1??? My ongoing concern is the integrity of all my existing files.

Yes, just install 68.4.1, since if you try to run an earlier version, even one in the same 68 branch, you get the error about 'older versions'. You should be able to install both add-ons in 68.4.1 (they both work here in W10). Uninstalling and reinstalling doesn't affect your data in the separate, profile folder. It's just that TB now has a 'profile protection' feature, of dubious merit, which makes it less easy to run older versions on profiles that have been accessed by newer versions.

If necessary, older versions can be run without the error appearing by starting from the command line with the --allow-downgrade argument.

Ok the 68.4.1 is now again installed and running...so I am back to getting those add-ons:

This profile switcher (which you gave a link to above & which I had actually tried earlier in the day) does not give the option to keep the current profile open. In the past - with my old profile switcher - I could run as many profiles as I wanted simultaneously. That profile switcher was by Paolo "Kaosmos"

Any idea how the current profile switcher might offer the option to keep the existing profile active and open another one?

Had a doctors appointment - couldn't answer until now. Drag and drop the newer TB on the old one and replace it. When you restart: the Profile warning should be gone. Then you can install upgrades to your critical extensions one-by-one.

You didn't need to downgrade your TB - you needed to upgrade your extensions.
