I get an error message on replying to or forwarding any email on the recent upgrade 68.

See error message in attachment.

It 100% fails to reply to any email and any forwarded email. The only way I can respond is by cutting and pasting the whole email series into a new email - then send. This is 100% repeatable and started when I upgraded to 68 which I wish I had never done!

Thanks all ok.

It has also solved I think another problem which has gone away - drafts were sometimes slow or impossible to save... That all seems to have cured - unless there was a BT network fault....

Please post your Troubleshooting Information. At the top right of the Thunderbird window, click the menu button , then select Help > Troubleshooting Information. Press the "Copy text to clipboard button" and paste the information into your reply.

I managed to include the error message in the box above ( attached screen shot), so I dont understand your answer. I have followed it but if I click on that botton, nothing happens!

The error suggests your outgoing server must use port 587 with STARTTLS connection security. Tools/Account Settings, Outgoing Server (SMTP) at the bottom of the left pane. Who is the mail provider, and what are your settings?

I dont see that from the tools menu, but get to it by highlighting my account at the top of the main screen (Christopher Robb)

Email provider is Google mail.

Clicking on Out going SMTP:

I get Googlemail 2 items

- smtp .smtp.googlemail.com (default ) this is in bold port 465 Default = 465

Connection security SSL/TLS Authentication method: Normal security

and

Christopher Robb smtp.gmail.com (port 25)

If I go to edit this one, it shows it is set at 25 but marks default at 587

My connection security = none and I dont see STARTTLS anywhere.

When I log in I have to use a downgraded security because Google security standard was different.

I presume Christopher Robb is the settings that are actually used as that is the name heading the list of email folders. See attached setting screen shot.

Thanks for your ongoing help.

re :Christopher Robb smtp.gmail.com (port 25) According to image, this outgoing smtp will fail to work as only the 'server name' is correct. So it's no surprise if you are trying to use this smtp outgoing server then it will fail.

The 'Description' field is helpful as it means you can type whatever you want to help differentiate between various smtp outgoing server which may have similar server settings. 'User Name' must be the full gmail email address. Port: 587 uses Connection Security: STARTTLS which is available in the drop down selection. Port: 465 uses Connection Security: SSL/TLS which is available in the drop down selection. You would need to edit that 'smtp.gmail.com' outgoing server.

I would typically expect to see:

  • Description: GMAIL C Robb
  • Server Name: smtp.gmail.com
  • Port: 587
  • User Name = Full gmail email address
  • Authentication Method: Normal Password.
  • Connection Security: STARTTLS

OR

  • Description: GMAIL C Robb
  • Server Name: smtp.gmail.com
  • Port: 465
  • User Name = Full gmail email address
  • Authentication Method: Normal Password.
  • Connection Security: SSL/TLS

But you have not provided the information on what your gmail account is actually using.

Click on the mail account name in left column. then bottom right it will say which smtp server that email address is using to send. See my image below to show what I'm talking about.

Does your outgoing server say it is using : Google Mail - smtp.googlemail.com (default) or Christopher Robb - smtp.gmail.com

Helpfull - I think just for clarity, I have attached 4 files which show the set up. I have sent what I think is the 4 relevant screen shots. I think the non default entry "Christopher Robb" is not used and I presume can be deleted?

I have not altered anything but the problem seems to have gone away....

It seems that my entries are correct......

would I be better off using STARTTLS and port 587 or stick with SSL/TLS?

Not being technical - I struggle a bit as its 12 years since I retired!

Thank you

Your settings look right now, and you can delete the non-Default SMTP. No need to change the outgoing security from SSL/TLS to STARTTLS.

If you have problems in the future because Google changes some security settings on the account, or if you add the account to another computer, I would use OAuth2 authentication instead of 'normal password', but in the meantime leave it as is.

If you don't need access to drafts from other devices, set the storage location to Drafts on Local Folders in Account Settings, Copies & Folders. This will avoid issues with uploading to remote IMAP folders.
