So from the log I got.

 2019-12-27 19:34:02.916000 UTC - [(null) 9352: Unnamed thread 1CC96040]: I/IMAP 1BC19000:mail.twc.com:NA:CreateNewLineFromSocket: * CAPABILITY IMAP4rev1 UIDPLUS NAMESPACE QUOTA SORT SORT=DISPLAY ID

The important part of that is that the server identifies itself as supporting the ID command.

So latter Thunderbird send such a command.

2019-12-27 19:34:03.085000 UTC - [(null) 9352: Unnamed thread 19469D60]: I/IMAP 1BC15000:mail.twc.com:A:SendData: 5 ID ("name" "Thunderbird" "version" "68.3.1")

The TWC server responds.

2019-12-27 19:34:03.132000 UTC - [(null) 9352: Unnamed thread 19469D60]: I/IMAP 1BC15000:mail.twc.com:A:CreateNewLineFromSocket: 5 BAD Unrecognized command: ID

That again is Unrecognized command: ID

So I have no doubt at all that the TWC server is not only the problem child, but that is it actually lying as it apparently does not support the ID command. Ironically theID command was created to make tracking issues to particular server/ Client software. It serves no purpose except for humans reading logs to identify the software being used.

This was a follow up to bug 1231592 They appear to still be using the same product in production, I would expect nothing much has changed. It is identified in the log as

Searching on Google shows an announcement from last century that IBM would be selling Software.com's Intermail But I can find no references to this software since the turn of the century. But it's sister openwave appears to be owned by Synchross they say

I wonder how they monetize email?

But I digress, there is a global setting to suppress Thunderbird's use of the ID command. Use the Config Editor to set mail.server.default.send_client_info to false (right click the preference in the Config Editor to get the menu of actions. See Bug 741374 for the source of the pref. I have no idea where it started. )

Ok, so there is a load more o the message.

I have seen a number of folk on this forum of late with issues with the old road runner. somewhere servers. As best I can ascertain from the spectrum web site (It is rubbish) those server names are not what should be used.

Could you contact Spectrum and confirm the correct server names to connect to your mail account. I am happy to work with you to plug them in, but I just can not work out if the old servers are supposed to be used, the TWC ones or the spectrum ones. I hate these legacy accounts because the organizations in charge now really are not helpful in offering up connection details.

What I can say is Thunderbird would create a new mail account for road runner using the mail.twc.com mail servers. See https://autoconfig.thunderbird.net/v1.1/rr.com So your existing server names are probably now wrong.

Mine is doing this also only with TWC /Spectrum accounts, others are ok. I checked the mail server setting listed on their site and they are correct in my setup, pretty simple, mail.twc.com for both incoming and outgoing IMAP servers. I deleted one account and let Thunderbird configure it automatically and it still does this, only the first time you go into a folder, the message does not come up again until you restart the application. Any other ideas?

But are they? I really don't know.

What I do know from years ago is charter customers really needed to use the mobile settings for a trouble free experience which they give as

Email Settings

  • Username: Your full Spectrum email address
  • Password: Your Spectrum email password
  • SSL: On
  • Protocol: IMAP
  • Incoming Email Server: mobile.charter.net
  • Port: 993
  • Outgoing Email Server: mobile.charter.net
  • Port: 587
  • Requires Authentication: Yes, or checked

You might want to check the setting in account settings > Server settings "Allow immediate server notifications....." change it to on or off, just not what it is now and see if that helps. Perhaps the server is reporting it does immediate notifications but it does not really or something.

Thanks for your help, well I changed the server name to mobile.charter.net and it would not take my password. Put it back and tried the notification setting and still no change.

I hate TWC email, there is one other main competitor to them in town here the phone co. and there was a time that I could not send an email to an address on the phone company system.

Thanks.

The settings for TWC that worked in the past are:

mail.twc.com for both the incoming (IMAP port 143 or POP port 110) and outgoing (SMTP port 587) servers, with Connection security = None, authentication = password, transmitted insecurely and User Name = email address.

This is the same as recommended here. Note that they also offer a secure (SSL/TLS) IMAP connection on port 993 and SMTP on port 465.

If you prefer the settings for Charter, they are:

mobile.charter.net. for both the incoming (IMAP port 993) and outgoing (port 587) servers, with Connection security = SSL/TLS, authentication = normal password, and User Name = email address.

Note that the security on port 587 should be SSL/TLS, not the usual STARTTLS:

None of those setting make any difference except if I use the charter addresses it rejects my password. I can send and receive mail even with this irritating message.

I am going to ween myself off of TWC "free" email, looks like you get what you pay for, have had trouble for years. I have an account with fastmail.com an email service that charges $5 a month for real private email and a feature they have that I love is that you can create up to 300 alias email addresses. I created an address just for this forum. dbkfirefox@ (not affiliated with Fastmail)

They provide exactly what for the $5 that I don't get for free with GMX.com? I really would like to understand there. I like GMX because they are in Germany, a country that understands privacy. Unlike the USA or any other of the five eyes treaty members.

Well they offer me an alternative to my internet providers offerings. Go to their site and see what you get. I believe Fastmail is located in Australia.

What do you mean, I use Thunderbird because I prefer it to Outlook. Who said dump Thunderbird, that is how I get my email and it works PERFECTLY with my other email provider Fastmail. It it Time Warner/Spectrum that is the problem.

There is a difference between an email provider and an email client or application.

Db Kelly is talking of his paid provider fastmail, and I am querying what he gets that I do not with my free GMX mail account. I am not planning on moving, but I was interested to know what he though was the benefit of fast mail. I have looked and I do not see any benefits at all really.

This thread is probably off topic, because there is not an issue with Thunderbird, there is an issue with the mail server software used by TWS, or there is some other issue. I have no problems with the 5 or 6 different mail providers I have in Thunderbird, so a specific Thunderbird bug is very unlikely.

But I think you also have to be aware, Thunderbird is not a Mozilla product. It used to be, but it in no longer and has been only in name for some years. Now it is not even in name.

Please prepare a log of you IMAP connection to the server using the instructions found here. https://wiki.mozilla.org/MailNews:Logging#Windows

Once you have the log post here and I will give you an email address to send it to so I can see what causes the issue.
