Firefox has stopped accessing the Win7 CLSID filetype associations from the download list (for media filetypes at least). How do I restore this function?

When I access a file from the downloads list in Firefox, it returns a basic Windows error: "Server Execution Failed." This error is a recent development. If I go to the file in the Containing Folder, then it works just fine. I'd like to restore this direct shell access functionality in Firefox. Can I do this?

Hi PiedmontJim, is Windows supposed to do something unusual with those downloads? The error message doesn't sound familiar.

One difference between using the Downloads list and launching from the folder is the privilege level. Firefox 68+ use a new launcher process to run the browser with the lowest possible privileges, and that is inherited (to some extent at least) when an application is launched to handle an item the Downloads list. I haven't heard of handler applications giving that kind of error, but if it can't function with reduced privileges, perhaps that is the problem.
