Hi, I'd like to import bookmarks from Safari, and can do it directly or download them from Safari. I want to erase the current bookmarks so I don't have duplicates. And also be able to properly place the bookmarks in favorites or bookmarks.

Thx for the help

Also, is searching this solution, it says to import bookmarks go to the bookmark icon in the upper right and select import and export. It doesn't exist.

As to your current bookmarks, just delete them. As to importing new ones,

These instructions are for Firefox. Other browsers should also be able to do this.

These instructions will combine the new bookmarks with the old.

Open the Bookmarks Manager; Press the Alt or F10 key to bring up the toolbar, and select Bookmarks. Hot key is <Control> (Mac=<Command>) <Shift> B.

Once the window is open, at the top of the page, press the button labeled Import and Backup. Select Export Bookmarks To HTML, and follow the prompts and save it to a HTML file. Copy the file to another computer/profile. Repeat the instructions above, BUT select Import Bookmarks From HTML.

Mozilla search: Import {web link}

As a footnote to the above:

I think some Mac users have icons only for the Library menus instead of words or icons + words. You might need to click each icon and look at the drop-down to see which one has Import, or see whether you have the icon that matches the Windows version (star with circling arrows):

Thanks for the help, but confusing to navigate around. First, where is the bookmarks manager? A search does not find it. Thx.

Note that Firefox 67 has been released that comes with an import item in the File menu. See also:

This worked. One major issue: I find it very difficult to delete the old bookmarks and some I can't delete at all. What am I doing wrong?

Also, How do I rename bookmarks and folders?

Thx again, very helpful.

On Mac, easiest is to use the Bookmarks Manager (Library) to make changes to the properties of a bookmark or folder. You select the parent folder in the left panel and select the folder of the bookmark you want to inspect or modify in the right panel. The Details panel at the bottom right shows all the properties like name and location (some lesser used properties can be revealed if you click the More button). On other platform you usually do this via the right-click context menu in the Properties.

Import /export does not exist. I have same issue.

On Mac you only have icons on the toolbar in the Library (Bookmarks Manager). In the Bookmarks Manager (Library) there is a toolbar with the Back and Forward button and three other buttons (Organize, Views, Import & Backup). If you hover a button with the mouse then you should see a descriptive tooltip text.

  • first button (cogwheel): Organize (Organize your bookmarks)
  • second button: Views (Change your view)
  • third button (up/down arrow): Import & Backup (Import and backup your bookmarks)

I'm using Safari 13.0.2 and MacOS 10.14.6 (Mojave) and Firefox 69.0.3

It's easy to delete bookmarks in the Bookmarks Manager as described above. Just select the folder they're in and you can select individual bookmarks, multiple ones, or all; then hit Delete on your keyboard or right-click/Delete. I deleted all of mine.

The Import Data from Another Browser option is in the menu with the up/down arrow icon and in the File menu, as described above.

But I can't get it to work from either location.

Select Safari, then the only option is Bookmarks, then the Import Wizard reports bookmarks successfully imported. But even after restarting Firefox there are no bookmarks in any folder.

I use Pinboard (https://pinboard.in) for most of my bookmarks so I can access them from any browser on any device anywhere and avoid this import/export stuff. It's $11/yr. But I still need a solution to quickly import the hundreds of bookmarks I use daily in my Safari favorites toolbar because I want to ditch Safari.

Is this a case of Firefox needing to catch up with recent changes in Safari's bookmark management?

Hi dzturbd, I don't know what might be complicating Firefox's ability to retrieve bookmarks from Safari.

Before trying again, please check the bottom of the Bookmarks Menu to see whether you find a folder with a name similar to "From Safari" containing the imported bookmarks. (When importing from other browsers, Firefox usually creates a folder instead of trying to figure out the corresponding location in Firefox.)

If that approach doesn't work, you can export in HTML format from Safari and then import that file into Firefox.

  • In Safari: File > Export Bookmarks. Look for a file named “Safari Bookmarks.html”

Thanks jscher2000,

Nope, no new folder in the Bookmarks Menu (and I tried a couple more times, and looked also in the Library. I blame it on Safari;)

But the HTML export/import was easier than expected. All I had to do was a little rearranging in the Bookmark Manager.

Problem Solved!
