What is Firefox doing when it tries to connect to these addresses - detectportal.firefox.com, shavar.services.mozilla.com, secure.fanboy.co.nz ?

Firefox randomly and repeatedly calls out to addresses that have nothing to do with my browsing, and I'm trying to find out which I can block. I've identified a few that seem to be related to the *constant* checking for updates, but some I'm not sure about:

detectportal.firefox.com shavar.services.mozilla.com secure.fanboy.co.nz

BTW, why is it so difficult to disable automatic update checks? I found an article about JSON files, but shouldn't it just be a setting in preference? The constant update checks are interfering with my browsing, which should get priority, I think.

Firefox 65.0 on MacOS

detectportal.firefox.com is used to detect captive portals on public wifi networks to be able to redirect you to their logon screen, so you don't just get page loading errors in firefox (set network.captive-portal-service.enabled to false in about:config in order to disable that feature). shavar.services.mozilla.com is used to update the list of trackers that are getting blocked when tracking protection is turned on. secure.fanboy.co.nz will be used by your adblocking addon to update its filter lists.

i would suspect that all of these connections only have a negligible impact on your normal browsing.
