How can I completely turn off updates in Firefox 65.0?

I absolutely HATE AND DETEST when a program forces automatic updating on me. I refuse to use Windows 10 for this reason, will never install Google Chrome (in addition to it spying on the end user) and uninstall programs whenever I catch them calling out for updates without my permission. I really don't want to have to give up on Firefox, but I will absolutely do so if I can't find a way to stop it from telling me that an update is available every time I turn it on. And PLEASE! Don't waste your breath telling me why Mozilla thinks this is necessary. I don't care in the least what their reasons are. All I know is that Firefox 66 moves the tab bar back where I don't want it and I'm tired of having to tweak some file or another to get things where I want them. TIA.

Hello JBVic,

If it's either stop Firefox updating ot moving to another browser :

You could create a policies.json file (you'll have to scroll down some) :

https://github.com/mozilla/policy-templates/blob/master/README.md

Or :

  1. Download and Install Enterprise Policy Generator add-on from AMO
  2. Click on its icon on the toolbar
  3. In the left pane, after scrolling down under ‘Updates & Data Collection’
  4. Select ‘Prevent Firefox from Updating’.

You should not disable updates. If you're referring to the changes to userChrome.css that move the tab bar, that just requires a tweak to your css code.

A slight change was made to the syntax for "tabs" in Firefox 65.

What part of what I said in my OP did you not understand? NO preaching. I'm a big boy and know what I'm doing. If you have nothing to answer my question and just wanted to preach, it would have been better that you not reply at all.

Many thanks for totally addressing my OP! I'll give it a try.

And if there's any Mozdevs out there paying attention to this thread, PLEASE make updating an option again. I am NOT going to slowly be tricked into using what amounts to just another Chrome-clone.

Wait just a second here. Your reply doesn't answer my question. My question remains unanswered. That question is: HOW CAN I COMPLETELY TURN OFF FORCED UPDATE CHECKS IN FIREFOX 65?

If this simply isnt' possible, then I'll have to remove Firefox and go with Palemoon.

Well then, I see pretty clearly what's going on here. It's just more social engineering by Mozilla. They're making it such a PITA to avoid updates by nagging you to death, that eventually you're supposed to give up and just accept automatic updating in the background.

Well, that's not going to ever be something that I'll accept. Ever.

I'd like to see what kind of censorship is going on in the background of this Support forum. I'm guessing that Google is probably calling the shots here too, as Firefox inches closer to being completely yet another Chrome-clone.

Over and out, thanks for nothing.

If you are interested in trying to understand why "Tabs on Bottom" is no longer the default, see this explanation from a Mozilla developer back in 2010 during the lead up to Firefox 4.0. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HmgtW2Iw-kE

Then with Firefox 29 Australis the pref for disabling Tabs on Top was removed so that Mozilla didn't need to support 2 sets of code.

And currently Mozilla is in the process of eliminating XUL from the UI in favor of HTML code; thus what seems to be some changes with each new version that now comes out. And it ain't gonna get any better in the near future. Hell, the primary version of Firefox that I use is Firefox 38.7.1 ESR due to my getting disgusted with Firefox over 4 years ago. Yes, I have Firefox 65 installed and use it, too, but not all that often. And to think I was living on the "cutting edge" of Firefox development with Nightly (formerly known as Minefield) until Firefox 4.0 was released in March of 2011 and IMO things went all to hell with Firefox. And in June 2011 was when the Rapid Release scheme hit the fan, making the situation even worse.

If you don't want Firefox to get changed so frequently, wake up and smell the coffee; and act like "the big boy" that you claim to be. IOW, complain less here and spend some time perusing the fora for answers that were given in similar questions from other users who weren't so confrontational. The people who answer questions here are for the most part merely other Firefox users who deserve better than the poor attitude or argumentative attitude that too many users come here with.

In a nutshell, you can use the ESR version which gets security updates, but changes to the UI don;t come until the next new ESR version - which will be Firefox 68.2 ESR in October. Or see this answer - https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1243498#answer-1195330 - where you can learn a bit about using a policies.json file to disable updates.

edit: whoops, too slow writing my answer, McCoy beat me to mentioning policies.json

Wow. The quoting method in this forum has me totally messed up.
