Well Fred I wanted to give it some time to try out all your good suggestions and it seems they were well directed and got at the problem for the time being at least. Many thanks for your time and effort.

Make sure you are not blocking content.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode {web link} by holding down the <Shift> (Mac=Options) key, and then starting Firefox.

A small dialog should appear. Click Start In Safe Mode (not Refresh). Is the problem still there?

One issue that seems more common lately is Firefox's Tracking Protection feature. When it is blocking content in a page, a shield icon will appear at the left end of the address bar next to the padlock icon. This article has more info on managing this feature: Tracking Protection {web link}

I tried safe mode as you say and it worked once and I thought the problem was fixed but subsequent tries failed . Still stuck on spinning wheel.

With Safe Mode, or not?

When opening Firefox in safe mode I can then go to icloud and open it one time. When I close and try reentering I am again stuck on spinning wheel page until I close and re-open the browser, (in safe mode). It's as if opening cloud triggers a blocking mechanism in my computer for return visits to that cloud.

It could be the work of one of your add-ons, or it could be Hardware Acceleration. How to disable Hardware Acceleration {web link}

Type about:addons<enter> in the address bar to open your Add-ons Manager. Hot key; <Control> (Mac=<Command>) <Shift> A)

In the Add-ons Manager, on the left, select Extensions. Disable a few add-ons, then Restart Firefox.

Some added toolbar and anti-virus add-ons are known to cause Firefox issues. Disable All Of them.

If the problem continues, disable some more (restarting FF). Continue until the problem is gone. After, you know what group is causing the issue. Re-enable the last group ONE AT A TIME (restarting FF) until the problem returns.

Once you think you found the problem, disable that and re-enable all the others, then restart again. Let us know who the suspect is, detective.

Turning off hardware acceleration and restarting worked, but only for the first entry into icloud after going away and coming back I could not get past spinning wheel. I go to the addons site >>extensions and am told "you don't have any add-ons of this type installed".

This issue can be caused by corrupted cookies or cookies that are blocked.

Clear the Cache and remove the Cookies from websites that cause problems via the "3-bar" Firefox menu button (Options/Preferences).

"Remove the Cookies" from websites that cause problems:

  • Options/Preferences -> Privacy & Security
    Cookies and Site Data -> Manage Data

"Clear the Cache":

  • Options/Preferences -> Privacy & Security
    Cookies and Site Data -> Clear Data -> Cached Web Content: Clear

This was helpful in that I can sign in to my icloud account on Firefox but when I leave that page and come back I must every time clear the cash and cookies in the preferences. Most unhandy and indication something is still lodged deep inside my computer that keeps creeping up.

Remove History For One Site

Open the History Manager <Control><Shift> H. In the search bar, enter the name of the site. Right-click on one of the listings and select Forget About This Site. This should remove all information, including any passwords / settings.

Unfortunately this occurs on 2 Windows laptops and a Windows desktop - laptops wireless and desktop wired. Only occurred in last 3 weeks. Worked OK when in US but since return to Aust it occurs on each Windows computer and ends with a "unable to contact server message" and a button to report to Apple which may or may not be reported. Have spent time with Apple who have not heard of it. Each Windows 10 installation is different on each computer. It also occurs when in different locations in Australia - e.g. Melbourne and North of Sydney. On current laptop can use MS Edge to get to sign in window and actually log in to iCloud. Is it something in Firefox? Settings? Have tried to find an answer but unsuccessful thus far.
