I updated from 57 to 63 and am No longer able to view "live" Youtube videos. I can view older videos. your browser does not currently recognize any of the video formats available

I blew away all addons. I turned off Use Hardware acceleration. I installed Flash Player.

No luck. Help

  • I have to assume your situation is unique for the moment, unless a flood of other FF 63 users start reporting the the same thing.
  • I'm still on 61.0.2 at the moment and may grab version 63 sooner than later.
  • Meanwhile, any and all details you can provide about your setup, software, hardware, etc with your Desktop/Win-7 system would help.
  • Are your FF Plug-Ins (vs Extensions) in order? (See pics.)

Ah, he didn't 'blow away' every Extension. Do you think that YT Flash is likely the problem preventing his Live YT videos?

Older videos may work because enough time has passed for the video to be encoded in different formats that you can support. Live videos on YT may need you to fully support of HTML5 player.

Do you get all checks as blue on https://www.youtube.com/html5/ ?

If two or three checks are red then you may not have the media feature pack installed (for the needed codecs used by HTML5 players) if you have a N or KN edition of Windows 7. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/fix-video-audio-problems-firefox-windows

Note the word Addons is a general term that groups together Extensions, Themes (image + complete), Plugins, search engines, dictionaries, language packs. You likely only needed to look at your Extensions.

Youtube has not used the Flash Player Plugin for current videos for a while now.

As said the various extensions (like the YouTube™ Flash® Player you have) that tries to make Youtube use Flash Player Plugin can cause issues so you should disable or rather uninstall it.

You likely only needed to look at your Extensions. Youtube has not used the Flash Player Plugin for current videos for a while now. As said the various extensions (like the YouTube™ Flash® Player you have) that tries to make Youtube use Flash Player Plugin can cause issues so you should disable or rather uninstall it.

Thank you all for suggestions! I'm going thru your suggestions now. I am using YouTube Al Jazeere Live as my test page...

Removed Flash. No change

I get TWO red checks at https://www.youtube.com/html5/ H.264 and MSE & H.264 I see it says The HTML5 is used when available.

Cleared cashe. No change.

I'm going thru the Windows Media Feature Pack now. Windows Media play does (did) function. I've never tired to upload videos and I have no desire to.

I want to look at what services I have running. Maybe I have a service shut off that the NEW Firefox requires?

Used "Restore Point" to load earlier version of Firefox. I'm now able to view Live video such as YouTube Al Jazeera Live.

The problem IS definitely related to loading the latest version of Firefox.

If you want to try upgrading again,

Make sure you are not blocking content.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode {web link} by holding down the <Shift> (Mac=Options) key, and then starting Firefox.

A small dialog should appear. Click Start In Safe Mode (not Refresh). Is the problem still there?


One issue that seems more common lately is Firefox's Tracking Protection feature. When it is blocking content in a page, a shield icon will appear at the left end of the address bar next to the padlock icon. This article has more info on managing this feature: Tracking Protection {web link}

I lost all of my saved passwords. I DO appreciate the suggestion Fred, but for the time being, I will not trust updates of any sort.

An "upgrade" implies an improvement. What I have now works as compared to what I had for the past 24 hours.

Firefox 63 enabled support for VP9, which is a codec (?) created by Google. Several users have requested a way to hide this capability from YouTube so they can continue to use older codecs because VP9 is hard on their CPU. So far, the only workaround I've seen is this add-on:

However, if your Firefox can't handle H.264, that add-on won't work for you. You would want YouTube to see that you can handle VP8 but not VP9. I'm not aware of a way currently to thread that needle in Firefox 63. Perhaps others will find one in coming days.

Updating my last reply, if you want to block WebM/VP9 but be able to play WebM/VP8, I created a userscript based on the h264ify extension that is more targeted. It tested out working in Tampermonkey and Violentmonkey, but not in Greasemonkey.

Step 1 is to get a "monkey" extension that lets you inject snippets of script into web pages:
