I am running Firefox ESR 52.9.0, but the option to "Sign in and Sync" seems to be missing.

I recently received a new computer, and use to use the syncing function to carry over my bookmarks, but my current profile doesn't seem to be able to do that. Has this featue been removed from more current versions of Firefox ESR?

I just tested Firefox ESR 52 on my own system and had no issues signing into Firefox Sync. It's possible that your system is being managed by some form up policy (such as Windows Group Policy or a policies.json file.

If this is a work computer or a computer managed by a system administrator, you will need to ask them for further assistance, since making changes to the policies on the computer could land you in some hot water.

If you own this device and it's your own personal device, then you can remove these policies from your computer.

It's also worth noting that Firefox ESR 52 is no longer supported by Mozilla, meaning that it no longer receives security updates. Since you appear to be running Windows 10 on your computer, you can safely upgrade to the latest Firefox ESR version (assuming that you don't need any of the legacy functions available in Firefox ESR 52).

If you are just using this computer for personal use, you may even want to change over to the Firefox standard release version instead of running the extended support release version. The ESR version is intended for business environments and most personal users install the Firefox standard version.

You can instead use a USB jump drive to transfer files to the new computer.

You can copy files like these with Firefox closed to the current profile folder to recover specific data.

  • bookmarks and history: places.sqlite
  • bookmark backups: compressed .jsonlz4 JSON backups in the bookmarkbackups folder
  • cookies.sqlite for the Cookies
  • formhistory.sqlite for saved autocomplete Form Data
  • logins.json (passwords) and key4.db (58+) or key3.db (57 and older) (decryption key) for Passwords saved in the Password Manager
if you only have key3.db then make sure to remove an existing key4.db
  • cert9.db (58+) or cert8.db (57 and older) for (intermediate) certificates stored in the Certificate Manager
if you only have cert8.db then make sure to remove an existing cert9.db
  • persdict.dat for words you added to the spelling checker dictionary
  • permissions.sqlite for Permissions and possibly content-prefs.sqlite for other website specific data (Site Preferences)
  • sessionstore.jsonlz4 for open tabs and pinned tabs (see also the sessionstore-backups folder)
