Both our desktop and laptop computers now randomly restart or lockup when using Thunderbird. What settings should we change?

Since (about) two updates ago our laptop has been "randomly" rebooting when we were using Thunderbird. As of the last update our desktop has been freezing (not allowing any input via either the keyboard or the mouse) and the power needs to be manually turned off and then on again to restore the machine. Can this (these?) problem be fixed by changing the options? The problem never occurs when Thunderbird is not the focus.

Thanks for any help!

Please start *Windows'* safe mode with networking enabled

If problem does not go away, run hardware tests - memory and disk at minimum.

Thanks for your quick response! But... it doesn't solve the problem.

It seems to occur ONLY when Thunderbird has the focus; it occurs with two different machines; we have already run a full suite of hardware tests on both machines and have found nothing very interesting. Also, on the desktop machine it simply blocks any input from either the mouse of the keyboard, but does allow the on/off button to function. On the laptop it displays the "blue screen of death". In both cases the machine must be rebooted.

The common factor seems to be that the machines are on the same network, although the desktop is wired and the laptop is wifi.
