Ask to save logins and passwords for websites" is greyed out

FF will not save my password for at least one site. The issue is not related to the site. All other Browsers are able to save the user and name and password to this site.

I am using FF 61.0.1. I have noticed that "Ask to save logins and passwords for websites" is greyed out. I have FF set to remember history. I have already read about how some people who has this problem in earlier versions were able to fix the problem by not using Private Browsing (which I am not) and by launching FF as an Administrator, which also doesn't take care of my problem.

I have even imported the saved logins from Chrome where this works, and even that did not address the issue. If someone can tell me what is causing this to be greyed out, I think that will be the answer to the problem.

Which security applications do you have installed?

Some provide a Firefox add-on which takes over the Passwords feature inside of Firefox and "locks Firefox out" its own feature.

If you're not in private browsing mode, would you please check this :

Type in the address bar about:config and press Enter (promise to be careful, if asked)

Type in the search bar signon.rememberSignons

and make sure that its value is set to true

Then close and restart Firefox (unless the value already was set to 'true')

Seperate issue :

Your system details show that you need to update your Adobe Flash Player - you're running an old version, which can cause problems. Would you please uninstall your current version and install the latest version, which is 30.0.0.134

Uninstaller : https://helpx.adobe.com/flash-player/kb/uninstall-flash-player-windows.html

Note : some 'extras' may be offered in the download.

Is signon.rememberSignons locked if you check this pref on the about:config page?

Are you using a Firefox version that is setup by an IT department or the regular Firefox without special modifications?

Thank you for all of the replies. After checking the config, I can see that signon.rememberSignons has the status "Locked". I believe the-edmeister is correct that my antivirus software is locking it. I can see that there are 8 security related setting that are locked. My organization does not use a policy that would impact this, but that is also a good idea to check. When I get the time, I will sort out the AV issue.

Firefox 60+ supports policies that allows to disable specific features. I haven't read that security software is (mis)using these policies, so it is more likely that your IT department is involved.

More:

below is a list of the about:config password values. Can anyone tell me which values need to change to allow the use of the "Ask to save logins and passwords for websites" checkmark?

Hi Questor

The signon.rememberSignons pref that sets the remember state of the Password Manager shows as set to true in the screenshot, so the Firefox Password Manager should be enabled.

Did you make sure that you aren't in Private Browsing mode (never remember history)?

Do you get a key icon on the location bar?

What does the Forms & Passwords section show?

  • Options/Preferences -> Privacy & Security: Forms & Passwords: "Remember logins for sites"

The Options/Preferences normally shows a message at the top in case policies are active.

Thanx, I removed the "Always use private browsing mode" checkmark and I was able to save the passwords for the few site that did not work.

What confused me is that some sites did work.

Firefox won't store new passwords in a Private Browsing mode window, but will fill a saved username and password, so you need to disable PB mode temporarily if you need to save a new password. Note that special 'remember me' cookies do not work as well in Private Browsing mode.
