Websites become unresponsive but can still be scrolled through and the hand cursor appears all the time

In the past weeks, suddenly my Firefox started behaving really weird - a few times a day the currently opened tab becomes unresponsive (you can't click or hover anything) but you can still scroll through them (at least a bit - after that point, it's just plain white). At these times, the cursor is the hand one, during the whole unresponsiveness episode, as if everything was clickable (though obviously clicking does nothing). You also can't close the tab during this tab - the only way is either to wait a good 30 seconds for it to unfreeze or to change to a different tab and close the unresponsive one. When you do change tabs, though, the newly opened tab sometimes disappears completely, with a radial loading circle appearing in the middle of the screen for a few seconds before it magically reappears (it does _not_ reload, though!). From what I've been able to observe, this tends to appear on content-heavy websites like Reddit, Facebook and YouTube most often.

What is happening? I haven't changed my browsing habits in the past weeks, nor have I installed any new add-ons. I've tried disabling the ones I have but it's still happening with them turned off. What else may I try?

Hi how about try this : uninstall Firefox. Then Delete the Mozilla Firefox Folders in C:\Program Files , C:\Program Files(x86) & C:\ProgramData Then restart system. Then run Windows Disk Cleanup. (Note: This should be Pinned and run Weekly, If never done below expect 10's of gig's) Then run it again and click the button that says Cleanup System Files. Note: your Firefox Profile is saved. But you should make a back up before you do :

Reinstall with Current Release Firefox 60.0.0 with a Full Version Installer

Please let us know if this solved your issue or if need further assistance.

How long does the browser run before it freezes?

Start Firefox in Safe Mode {web link} by holding down the <Shift> (Mac=Options) key, and then starting Firefox.

A small dialog should appear. Click Start In Safe Mode (not Refresh). Is the problem still there?

OK, tried it - doesn't fix the problem though :(

Sometimes a good while (like an hour or so), sometimes it happens within 5 minut of starting up the computer and starting the browser - so there's no real regularity. I've tried the Safe Mode after you recommended it - it's still happening (it seems like it's less frequent maybe but still there).

Regretfully none of these really apply to my situation. - My browser is not slow when using it apart from those times, - it doesn't freeze in the sense that the whole program freezes and I have to kill the process but rather the freezes appear within the program, in the tabs; I don't get the "Firefox is already running, but is not responding." either, - neither CPU nor RAM usage is higher than at other times when this happens

That will make it harder to track down the problem.

What is on these pages? Players, pictures . . . . .

Is this with many web pages, some, a few?

This mostly happens on content-intensive websites like I mentioned. Had it happen to me on Reddit, YouTube, Facebook and some news websites which feature a lot of images and links simultaneously (onet.pl for example). So I think the common theme is a lot of media content on a website (though I don't have to start any video for example - often scrolling through the website is enough, even when the players are hidden, like on Reddit for example).

Yep, for example just now it happened on Reddit when I tried to expand a photo when scrolling through its homepage. Here's what the console says (censored my Reddit username :)):

OK, now it also happened when I was trying to browse google images search results (again - a lot of pictures on one website; this seems to be the commong theme). The console only output something like this (all warnings, no errors though):

What's your update on this?

What kind of computer, OS, HD (and space remaining), 1, 2, or 4 CPUs? Do you have a video card? Do you have 'Hardware Acceleration' checked under Options if you have a Video Card? Do you have Multiprocessors '2' or '4' checked under options if you have a Duo or Quad CPU system?

(I have Duo, so I have '2' checked.)

I found out that if I set my Windows-7 Pro 64-Bit SP1 Paging File too low, I greatly reduced hard disk crunching activity, but I kept getting a Windows-7 pop-up saying I'm too low on Memory! (Sigh)

So, I was at 8GB for the Paging File and it recommends over 12GB! It was disk-crunching too much already at 8GB! Dare I move it to 12GB?

I'm testing at 1Gb now. I'll up it a bit at a time if necessary. I'm now using a 16GB USB Flash Drive as a 'Dedicated ReadyBoost' Drive (Set at Windows recommended 4GB). Like a RamDrive, I guess.

Does your Extensions Auto-update? Did you try Disabling them or try 'Safe Mode'? Perhaps an Extension could be the problem? (if it auto-updated or did you recently do a manual update of one or more of the Extensions - and now the 'problem'?)

How many browsers Windows and Tabs are running when this happens?

I'm trying some different settings to help my ancient old system (Nov 2010 desktop) handle this 'Quantum Leap' of FireFox. I got 10 browser windows opened now. One window has over 480 Tabs (down from 600+).

PC with 8 gigs of RAM, Firefox resides on a 120GB SSD with 30GB free, one processor (i5-4670k). I have Hardware Acceleration turned off and processess limited to the default 4. I'd been running Windows 7 when I created this topic but later upgraded to Windows 10 hoping this would help in any way but it did not - nothing changed.

This does not happen in my case, though :( I don't get alerts about anything, the window does not freeze - only the content does.

Yep, they do auto-update. Tried both disabling them all, disabling them selectively and safe mode, all to no avail (I even described it in one of the previous answers). Thus, I'm not sure the extensions are to blame.

One browser, normally I have only a couple of tabs open. This problem happens regardless of that number, though - sometimes when I have one tab only, sometimes when there are 20.

Ooh. 30GB Free seems pretty darn low. Maybe that's ok with SSD's?

I ran into trouble with less than 100GB Free with my 1 Terabyte drive. Currently, I have 213GB Free. An OS and all the various programs like to have a big 'room' to play in. 30GB Free is like everyone is jammed into a small bathroom. Quite crowded. I dunno, but is ok to be at 30GB Free with Windows 10? It's not with Windows-7. I dunno about 8.

That's a small hard drive you have by today's standard, I'd say. Having Windows 10 and that 'small' drive with ONLY 30GB Free seems it would be a problem, let alone with Windows-7.

1 processor? That setting should not be at '4', I'd guess. Have you tried '2' or '1'?

If you have a more recent Video Card with lots of memory on it, then I'd try to have Hardware Acceleration turned On.
