Using Firefox 58 on a Mac running High Sierra, I remove Google from preferred search engines and choose DuckDuckGo as my default. When I restart Firefox, I find Google is reinstalled and made the default.

Type about:addons<enter> in the address bar to open your Add-ons Manager. Hot key; (<Control> [Mac=<Command>] <Shift> A)

In the Add-ons Manager, on the left, select Extensions. Remove “ Google “ Anything.

Also remove SafeSearch, SearchAssist Incognito, FileConverter Addon, SearchLock, DiscreteSearch, WebSearch, Findwide Search Engine

Now do the same in the computer’s Programs Folder.

Windows: Start > Control Panel > Uninstall Programs. Mac: Open the Applications folder. Linux: Check your user manual.

Thanks for the reply. I had and never have had any google add-ons. As that wasn't the source of the problem, it is regrettable if, to live up to its promise to allow me to choose my search engine, Firefox demands that I remove all Google programs from my machine.

I did not say to remove all Google programs, just the add-ons. What about the other programs I listed?

Sorry if I misunderstood you. I thought you said remove anything google from the Applications Folder. I have never installed any of the other listed items (SafeSearch, SearchAssist Incognito, FileConverter Addon, SearchLock, DiscreteSearch, WebSearch, Findwide Search Engine).

The list I provided is not complete as other such programs at created all the time.

Type about:support in the address bar and press Enter. Under the main banner, press the button; Copy Text To Clipboard.. Now in the Reply Box on the forum page, do a right-click in the box and select Paste.

This will show us your system details. No Personal Information Is Collected.

Look thru the Add-ons Manager and your Programs folder. If you see something that you don't know, use a web search on it.

I called for more help.

Set DuckDuckGo as your default. Then Close Firefox.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode {web link} by holding down the <Shift> (Mac=Options) key, and then starting Firefox.

A small dialog should appear. Click Start In Safe Mode (not Refresh). Is the problem still there?

https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/how-to-fix-preferences-wont-save

Note: Some software, like Advanced SystemCare with Surfing Protection, can protect files in the Firefox profile folder against changes. If you have such software then check the settings or uninstall this software.

Thanks for the suggestion. Unfortunately, I have tried it four times, sometimes deleting google from the search options, sometimes just setting duckduckgo as default. Each time I have quit then restarted firefox in safe mode, but each time google has been back as the default search.

When you are on the Preferences page, Search panel, working with the One-Click Search Engines box, try this alternate method: restore the default search engines using the button below the box, and uncheck the ones you never want to use by clicking the blue check marks in the left column to clear them. Hopefully that configuration will be more stable.

Your default search engine selection is stored in a settings file named search.json.mozlz4 in your currently active profile folder. I would be surprised if other programs were modifying this file, but it's possible that some security or utility program designed to protect against unwanted settings changes or designated to remove personal information might be deleting the file (or replacing it with an older version) between Firefox sessions. On Windows, Advanced SystemCare is known to modify Firefox settings files and CCleaner may remove them from time to time. I don't know if you have anything on your Mac that touches Firefox data.

Thanks for this. If I uncheck (but don't delete) google then reboot, google remains unchecked after reboot, but is nonetheless restored as the default search engine.

I have looked at the search.json.mozlz4 file, which reports it has not been modified since February 2. I don't think that have any particular applications that would interfere with Firefox data.

Hmm, that's actually a bit odd. If you keep that Windows Explorer folder open and make a change that the file records, such as dragging a site up or down in the One-Click Search Engines box or changing your default search engine, does the modified time on the file update to the current minute?

Oh, be sure you are looking at the file in your current profile folder. This article has the steps to access that: Profiles - Where Firefox stores your bookmarks, passwords and other user data.

Okay. Thanks. That does clarify things. and indeed the search file in my profile doe shows that it has been modified today. It still seems to be defaulting to Google, whatever I try to do to change that.

How long does the change stick once you make it? Does DuckDuckGo stay your default search engine throughout your session until you exit Firefox, and then at the next startup, it's Google again?

Could you check for alien script files in your Firefox program folder? In particular, in these locations (varies for 32-bit / 64-bit):

  • C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\defaults\pref
  • C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\defaults\pref

Caution: Do not double-click script files! The default action for a script file it to execute as a Windows system script. (Typically this would just give an error, but why risk it?)

Make sure Windows is showing hidden files: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/14201/windows-show-hidden-files

A file named channel-prefs.js is normal. Any other file in this folder is suspicious -- for example, dsengine.js (added by Lavasoft/AdAware Web Companion). Remove any such files to a neutral location for further analysis at your leisure.

Oops, sorry, you're on Mac. I'm not sure where you would look for the equivalent program folders. If you search for channel-prefs.js it would be in that folder.

Thanks once more for your help.

To how long, it will, I think, last as long as I'm running firefox, but if I quit and relauch, it has defaulted to google.

As to the files, I'm using a mac (OS X 10.13.3). I see no such files in my Library. Nor do I see any alien scripts.

Such a JavaScript file would be in this location on Mac:

  • /Applications/Firefox.app/Contents/Resources/defaults/pref

Thanks. I see no alien script files and google is still restored as default when I reboot

Thank you for checking. Is this any time you quit Firefox and start it up again, or only when you shut down your Mac and start the system up again?

Is the only change the default search engine, or do you notice changes to the list of search engines and/or order of the list?
