Incredibly slow after upgrade

Today Firefox automatically upgraded itself. After the upgrade, it is incredibly slow. Home page never finishes loading. Tried a simple page (google,com) and that loaded but nothing would work. Could not type in search bar. Could not access any of the Firefox menu (ie: help or tools) The upgrade also occurred several days ago and did the same thing. I did a system restore to get back to the earlier version. But again the automatic upgrade has struck.

I have been a Firefox user for years and am amazed that an upgrade could be so terrible! As a result, I have switched to Chrome and will stop recommending Firefox to everyone/anyone until the problem is resolved. After 25 years in the IT business, I do not wish to spend several hours troubleshooting a problem caused by and "upgrade"! I will attempt to start Firefox every once in a while to see if the next "upgrade" cures the problem. Until then...

No! I have had the Mozilla screen open fr about 34 minutes now and cannot access the menu buttons. It is frozen. It worked fine before the "upgrade"

Opened Firefox this morning. Still locked up / extemely slow. It opened to a "Sorry. We’re having trouble getting your pages back." While remaining on this page, I can access the menu and other screens. But I cannot access any web pages! They begin to load and then stop.

Noted that in Windows Task Manager, there are two and sometimes three Firefox applications running at the same time and consuming 80-95% of my CPU. In browsing (using another browser) in the Firefox forums, I saw a reference to multiple running processes. The fix seemed to fix the problem for the other user. I wam not able to find that conversation again. Help - can anyone point me to it?

BTW, my Firefox version is now 57. after the upgrade.

Finally found Refresh after a bit of lunch. Tried it and the system is still as slow as before. No change. Minimal content page - Google or Yahoo seems to open but still no access to menus or bookmarks or anything!

would you be up to something slightly adventurous? i'd like to produce an artificial crash of your firefox that would generate a report that'd show if there are any external programs hooking into the browser and perhaps causing the errors this way...

if yes, download the crashfirefox.exe (or the 64 variant if you're using 64bit firefox) from https://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/utilities/crashfirefox-intentionally/ and then run it while firefox is open. this should bring up the crash reporter - please submit the report.

then it's necessary to dig up the id of the report you've submitted. you can either do it by entering about:crashes into the firefox address bar and look for the newest submitted report there. or in case this isn't possible in the current state of your firefox, follow these steps to get to the id:

#On the keyboard, press [Windows] The image "Windows key" does not exist. + [R]. This should bring up a Run window that contains a text field.
  1. In that text field, type %APPDATA% and press Enter. An explorer window should open.
  2. From that explorer window, double-click on the Mozilla folder, then double-click on Firefox and then on Crash reports. Double-click on submitted.
  3. Now, you should see a list of files that contain reports. Go to View > Arrange Icons by > Modified to get the most recent files at the top of the window.
  4. Open the most recent 5 files with a text editor and copy the IDs.
  5. Paste each ID with bp- into the reply window on the forums.

hm, is this in the submitted folder - afaik the ones that successfully made it to mozilla's crash stats server should all have a filename starting with bp-... maybe an older one does it as well

great, then please try to edit the file that holds the firefox configuration manually (while the browser is closed) like this: go to the firefox profile folder, right-click and edit the prefs.js file and add the following line:

user_pref("accessibility.force_disabled", 1);

afterwards start firefox normally again *fingers crossed*

no, i think this is the result when you'd double-click on the file (which would attempt to execute it). when you right-click it though there should be a couple of options available including "edit" which opens the file in a text editor...

Added the file now. Saved and started Firefox again. Still incredibly slow. Managed to set home page to default. Still no real change. Noted still have 3 separate Firefox processes running in Task Manager.

are you able to go to the firefox menu ≡ > options > privacy & security panel now and could confirm that under permissions the setting to prevent accessibility services from accessing your browser is enabled?

Checked. Rebooted. Visited 6 different sites. Google, ebay, aol, local newspaper and weather radar. Everything seems to be working fine now! I will shut down browser and start again and see what happens.

Still working!! Philipp, you have worked a miracle by being patient with me most of the day! Now that Firefox is working, my wife has decided that it is time for supper. No playing on the computer until after dinner!
