I have Firefox 54.0.1 on Max OS-X 10.10.5. I must have closed my Firefox window without realizing it. I was checking an email and clicked a link to a google doc, which I quickly printed and then close the window. Then, when I went to go to my other firefox window, it was gone. Because I'd opened a new window (with the google doc) and closed it, not having realized I must have closed the previous window I had going rather than minimizing it, the "restore previous session" wasn't an option.

I had lots of tabs open in the window I want, and now it's a couple of windows back and I can't access it. Can you help me get those tabs back please?

Hi Kim, it's possible that you're out of luck -- I've had that scenario a couple times myself -- but please try this:

Open your current Firefox settings (AKA Firefox profile) folder using either

  • "3-bar" menu button > "?" button > Troubleshooting Information
  • (menu bar) Help > Troubleshooting Information
  • type or paste about:support in the address bar and press Enter/Return

In the first table on the page, click the "Show in Finder" button.

In your profile folder, scroll down and double-click into the sessionstore-backups folder. Save all files here to a safe location, such as your Desktop.

To see whether any of these files have your missing tabs, you can drag and drop a file onto the empty box on this page and click the Scrounge URLs button:

After having this problem multiple times, I switched Firefox to always restore my previous session at startup. That option is on the Preferences page as described in this article: Startup, home page, tabs, and download settings.

Good luck!

If you click History, are you sure there's no "restore previous session" option?

No...as I mentioned...it wasn't an option. I believe this is because I had accidentally closed the one I want to restore, opened a new window and closed it as well. Now what I restore is only the single tabbed window I opened last.

If you check History/Recently closed tabs, can you see anything?

recently closed windows and tabs also only allow me to open the ones that were opened after the fact.

I do have backups of my entire system that I could access if I know what files to look for and open up.

Mm, I think you're out of luck, then.

Hopefully, some other volunteers might came up with a working solution for your case.

I can't think of anything that could be of help as of right now.

Sorry about that.

History/Recently closed tabs shows only the few tabs I opened since this issue happened, which were in the newer window that I opened without realizing that I'd closed the one with the tabs I want.

If you can't find a session history file with the right tabs, you could try finding the missing pages in your regular browsing history and re-open them.

You can use the Library window ("Show All History" or Command+Shift+b, then click History in the left column) to review your history. Use right-click (or on a one button mouse Ctrl+click) then open the link in a new tab or new window as desired, otherwise it may replace a page you already have open.

Thank you SO much! I did manage to find many of the tabs in your first solution, and I think I can go through the history to find the rest. It's funny that the tabs I found weren't the last window that I had open with tabs, but many of those tabs listed were tabs I still had open. Some of the more recent ones weren't there, but perhaps I'll find them in the history.

Thanks so much for your reply and support! I'm very grateful to have gotten most of it back!
