How to disable Flash Player 'needs updating' message, and refusal to run Flash. Not consistent across websites either

I find Flash Player is a nightmare to update. Requires me to download 'Full' update package (otherwise the update stops at about 50%, always), which I can never remember how to do. I did that about 2 weeks ago, and now Firefox refuses to run it on some (and only some) websites as it is out of date. Other websites give me the choice of running outdated Flash, and some just run it.

Sorry, I have never been able to figure out why some websites are sensitive to wanting to use the absolute latest version of Flash, while other websites don't have a problem using a slightly older version.

Let's see what version of Flash you have installed for Firefox.

Type about:plugins in the URL bar and hit Enter.

What do you have under Shockwave Flash? C:\Windows\system32\Macromed\Flash\NPSWF32_24_0_0_194.dll is the current version of Flash.

Sometimes when Flash does get updated, the update doesn't clear out the older version. IOW, the Flash updater doesn't clean up after itself all the time, and you end up with something like this. That happened to me this time around with the latest Flash update. "Two" versions can confuse websites.

File: NPSWF32_24_0_0_186.dll,NPSWF32_24_0_0_194.dll Path: C:\Windows\system32\Macromed\Flash\NPSWF32_24_0_0_186.dll,C:\Windows\system32\Macromed\Flash\NPSWF32_24_0_0_194.dll Version: 24.0.0.186 State: Enabled (STATE_VULNERABLE_UPDATE_AVAILABLE) Shockwave Flash 24.0 r0

Has both the current .194 version and the previous .186 version. I don't know why some websites don't recognize that the .194 version is installed.

I ended up with that "extra" DLL during a Flash update on 1/18/2017 when Flash 24.0.0.194 was installed. The Flash 24.0.0.186 version was installed on 12/18/2016. Only a month between Flash updates. And Flash is set to check for updates once a month, unlike most other software that checks daily when the computer is first opened for the day.

To fix that - 1st, grab the Adobe uninstaller from here: http://helpx.adobe.com/flash-player/kb/uninstall-flash-player-windows.html

2nd, get Flash here: https://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/ Make sure that you deselect the "Optional offers".

Run the Flash uninstaller program, then reboot your PC. Then install the Plugin version of Flash. You'll then have a clean installation of Flash for Firefox.

Thanks for that ed-meister

I checked on the status of the Flash Plugin, and it was listing the '.186' version only, hence out of date. Sadly, for some reason, I can't update using the 'standard' Flash route (it crashes at 50% every time, even if updates are set to automatic), I have to do pretty much what you advise for every update, except that I need to download the standalone, version of Flash - i.e. the version one would put on a non-internet PC. This gets more than moderately tiresome, esp if I have to do it every month!

I think I know the answer to this, but is there a sane, non Adobe, alternative to Flash?

Thanks

Ian
