When writing an e-mail I can't change the colour of selected text

In the text editor the formatting controls for bold, italic, and underline work as I would expect but those for font and background colour have no effect. What am I missing? Another symptom which may have a bearing is that the spell checker is highlighting some perfectly spelled words as I type, but on using the spell check button the marks are removed.
