My computer is 6 years old so it is pretty old in computer terms. It has Windows 7 32 bit and 4G of RAM. Firefox has been getting slow for a while but now it just will not open at all when I click on it though when I shut down the computer it says "firefox needs to be shut down force re-start".

I have tried installing and re-installing, deleting all the App Data etc but this achieves nothing. I can't even get the program to respond by going to all programs ans using shift key to open in safe mode. Internet Explorer and Chrome work perfectly and load within a few seconds. I support the ideals of Mozilla and use the browser on my phone and Ipad but I am finally losing patience with it on desk top. Any ideas on how to solve this before I walk away? I have tried every single option you list on your site and nothing.

You say that Firefox will not start in Safe Mode?

Start your Computer in safe mode with networking. Then start Firefox. Try Safe websites. Is the problem still there?

Thanks very much for your reply. The problem is still there in safe mode. The process is running in Task manager but nothing opens at all, It is all very frustrating. It looks like I am going to have to move to Chrome after ten years of firefox. I am very pissed off with losing all my bookmarks though.,

I have found absolutely nothing in your help pages despite hours of trying, loading, re-loading, changing firefox file names to OldFirefox etc. I cannot even open in safe mode by clicking shift and firefox. It seems this new update is to blame.

Any other ideas before I up sticks?

You may have corrupt xulstore.json or Localstore.rdf file.

Close Firefox. Open your file browser to this hidden location:

  • Mac: *~/Library/Application Support/Firefox/
  • Linux: *~/.mozilla/firefox/
  • Windows: %AppData%\Mozilla\Firefox\
  • *C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\

Locate the above files. Then rename or delete them. Restart Firefox.

I can't find any such files in that location. I must have uninstalled and installed firefox 6 times though so surely no corrupt files? It is completely dead.

Please use the file search from the above folders.

Ok done and removed. Still no joy process running but window not opening. I have scanned my computer for virus and malware and it is clean. It can't be that the computer is old as the latest version of Chrome opens in seconds. I am very disappointed with this new release of Firefox. I don't know what else to try.

I am calling for more help.

Hello MattBod, try firefox portable version, as a test, and see if you can open it. Probably you will be able to open it.

thank you

Thank you very much for your response.

Sorry same thing is happening with the portable app. The thing runs as a process but does not open at all. No windows no nothing. Funnily enough Tor opens fine and that is running firefox. I have not a clue what is going on here. I thought something must have been corrupted. I am going to have to call quits on this and use Chrome on my PC. I still use firefox on phone and tablet though.

Would just like to know what is going on.

If you use Tor then check if the problem is in Tor connection, that's why maybe firefox not running without Tor, check in Options > Advanced > Network > Connection > Settings... do you have Manual proxy configurations checked ? try Use system proxy settings and check firefox again.

thank you

No Tor Browser is fine. It is the normal browser that refuses to function.

Cheers.

Yes, in your normal firefox check the settings. :-)

Thanks can you a be a little clearer what I am to do in settings in the command line? I don't understand completely.

In windows 7 command line (Command Prompt), type:

firefox -preferences

and then click OK, to open firefox preference tab.

thank you

If the above does not work, try this;

C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe -preferences

Sorry I am completely lost. Typing Firefox-preferences in command prompt does nothing and I can't find anything called firefox.exe preferences in programme files.

Sorry guys and thanks for all your help but I have finally run out of patience with this and uninstalled Firefox and installed Chrome which works fine. I am really pissed off though as I can't access any of my bookmarks on my laptop anymore: only on firefox on my tablet and phone. As I say I get a firefox.exe in task manager but f**k all pages will load.

Too frustrating and I have spent hours trying everything posted online about this issue.

That's firefox.exe <space> -preferences

Hi MattBod, So find the missing bookmarks, it sounds like the browser is still in safe mode. To double check, the folder on the desktop that says "Old Firefox Data" that will have the old places.sqlite file.

Thanks but still can't get firefox to open let alone mess with bookmarks. Typing in firefox space hyphon preferences, firefox.exe space hyphon preferences as idiato says does nothing. No tabs just saying invalid command.

Open your file browser to the Programs Folder, Locate Firefox.exe, and create a new shortcut. Move it to your desktop.

Now use that shortcut to open Firefox in Safe Mode by holding down the <Shift> (Mac=Options) key. A small dialog should appear. Click Start In Safe Mode (not Refresh).
