The left-hand menu (see above) appears for a few seconds when I start Thunderbird but then it disappears and I can only see the inbox.

Try this: Make hidden files and folders visible:

In Thunderbird

  • Help > Troubleshooting Information
  • click on 'Show folders' button

a new window opens showing contents of profile name folder.

  • Close thunderbird now - this is important

Locate and delete the following files - they will be recreated when you restart.

  • foldertree.json
  • session.json
  • xulstore.json

Restart Thunderbird.

Reinstalled Thunderbird and now I'm stuck on the window 'Local folders' instead of the Inbox folder.

As a screen shot of the inbox window would reveal a lot of my friends' email addresses, I don't want to do that.

After the reinstall, I could not get out of the Local Folders window, but when I clicked on the new mail icon in Windows this morning (your email message), the Inbox window appeared instead. But now I can't get out of that window, for example to go to the Sent messages window. In the inbox window, there is nothing to the left of the window, i.e. where the list of folder normally appears. The leftmost column is 'Show message threads' (freely translated from Swedish). I can't find a button or command that opens that list.

More problems: the subject column for the past 30 or so messages is blanked out. The only thing shown in it is 'Re:'. Restarting Thunderbird doesn't fix the problem.
