Thunderbird often takes FOREVER to delete junk and trash from Hotmail account

I do not experience these delays with my Verizon (POP) email, only with my Outlook SMTP accounts. If I go do something else for a few minutes (and I mean minutes ... this is not a 30 second delay), the deletion normally completes, but it is annoying.
