Tabs launch themselves into new browser windows
With no input from me, sometimes tabs will launch themselves into new windows, deleting their tabs from the main browser window history. I can't find a reason or common thread for this behavior. Any ideas?

There is feature called "tear-off tabs" which will move a tab to a new window if you click on the tab portion (on the tab bar) and drag it down "off" the bar.
As far as I know, as website can't do this, it can only be done by the user or by an add-on.
Is it possible you are accidentally dragging the tab a bit when you select it?

Are these normal pages, or ads?
These are normal pages, various ones. These webpages do not consistently do this, it varies.
Firefox repeatedly opens empty tabs or windows after you click on a link
Firefox may repeatedly open new, empty tabs or windows after you click on a link, forcing you to close Firefox. The same untitled tabs or blank windows may open the next time you start Firefox if the previous session is restored.
This usually happens because you chose Firefox as the program to always use for a particular action, such as opening a certain type of file or launching an application to send mail.

The new windows are not empty, they are the tab launched into a new window, after the tab was opened previously. For example, say I have four tabs open in the same browser window. Let's say they are: Hotmail, ebay, craigslist, mozilla. Without warning, or any direction from myself, one of those tabs launches into a new window, deleting the tab it was and also deleting the tab it was from tab history.

One thing a page might be able to do is:
- use the window.open() script method to launch a new popup window
- then use the window.close() script method to close itself
However, window.close() is only allowed if the original page was itself launched by a script, so it usually would not be the first tab opened from a site. This would not be normal for any site that I can think of.

I tried to drag a tab, and at first nothing happened, but after a delay the tab opened itself into a new window. So maybe this is the solution. With the delay, I was not putting together 2 + 2. Thank you for your help.
