History and cookies can be removed or not recorded several ways;

  • 1) Running Firefox in Private Mode (nothing is recorded)
  • 2) Privacy settings; (Type about:preferences#privacy<enter> in the address bar.)
  • 3) Many disk cleaners and anti-virus type programs can remove data from browsers. Open their settings and have them leave the browsers alone.
  • 4) Mal-ware.

https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/how-to-fix-preferences-wont-save

Note: Some software, like Advanced SystemCare with Surfing Protection, can protect files in the Firefox profile folder against changes. If you have such software then check the settings or uninstall this software.

I don't use firefox in private mode, in fact I've never heard of it. I have privacy set to remember history. I don't use a disk cleaner and I have malware protection running in real time as long as the PC is on and I also scan every day. That just leaves my anti virus so I will check settings. Thank you

EDIT: There's nothing in my AV settings to suggest that it's removing data from browser, so I guess I am back to square one. Is anyone else having this problem?

The issue may be caused by the clear history settings.

Type about:preferences#privacy<enter> in the address bar.

The button next to History, select Use Custom Settings.

At the bottom of the page, turn on Clear History When Firefox Closes. At the far right, press the Settings button. Turn on ONLY Cache and Form And Search History leaving the others off.

If you use "Clear history when Firefox closes" then try to disable this feature.

  • Tools > Options > Privacy > Firefox will: "Use custom settings for history"

If clearing cookies didn't help then it is possible that the cookies.sqlite file in the profile folder that stores the cookies got corrupted.

  • Rename/remove cookies.sqlite (cookies.sqlite.old) and if present delete cookies.sqlite-shm and cookies.sqlite-wal in the Firefox profile folder in case cookies.sqlite got corrupted.

You can use this button to go to the current Firefox profile folder:

Sorry for the late reply None of these suggestions really relate to my problem. It happened again today, I opened firefox and my history, cache, logins etc were gone. See enclosed pic for my settings

Type about:support in the address bar and press Enter. Under the main banner, press the button; Copy Text To Clipboard.. Then in the reply box at the bottom of this page, do a right click in the box and select Paste. This will show us your system details. No Personal Information Is Collected.

If a line on the about:crashes page doesn't start with "bp-" then click the line to submit the report and the link will be updated and gets a "bp-" prefix if the report is submitted successfully. Please do not add the "bp-" prefix yourself.

What are the "Clear history when Firefox closes" setting if you select "Use custom settings for history" to inspect the cookie and history settings?

Did you try to disable this feature?

The default in the current release is likely to remove all personal data including the cookies when you close Firefox.

"Use custom settings for history" allows to access the current history and cookie settings for inspection and modification. Selecting "Use custom settings for history" doesn't make any changes to history and cookie settings.

This is my current settings for custom. I didn't try to disable anything?

That looks OK. With those settings Firefox should keep the cookies and other personal data.

Did this, but today when I opened firefox, all my history, logins etc were gone again. Would it be worth trying to reinstall firefox from scratch?

Edit: I found this on another thread https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1078190 I found all my privacy settings (privacy.clearOnShutdown) were set to true, so I have changed them. Fingers crossed this works

I've now tried everything possible, including uninstalling firefox and reinstalling and it's still happening. I give up!

Did you try a new Profile? https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/profile-manager-create-and-remove-firefox-profiles

This is just a troubleshooting exercise - don't delete anything - just create and see if the new Profile works better. If it does we'll help get your data transferred.
