When using an email list to send messages to a group, the recipient list of address names is not in alphabetical order, making it very difficult to check for a particular name.

If you view the Mailing List in the Address Book can you not sort it there?

Select the List and its contents will appear in the right hand pane. Clicking on "name" should then sort by name.

Thunderbird sorts the Address book mail list perfectly, on either first or last name. When the mail is sent out, the ' recipients ' each get the list and it is this ' from ' list which appears to be in random order.

…difficult to check for a particular name…
But have we not met your requirement to be able to check the list? Why is the order in which they're sent important?

The order is not very important, but it would be very helpful. Other members use the list and names get added or deleted; so occasionally it becomes necessary to check that we all have the ' same ' list. It seems strange that Thunderbird goes to all the trouble to scramble the names - for what purpose?

You might do better to use a mail merge based on a CSV file that you can manage using a spreadsheet, and circulate between the various users. Having one that you all share via Dropbox, or a similar service, would help you all be in synch.

If you don't like mail merge, then if the CSV file is structured appropriately, it would be easy to import it into Thunderbird on an as-needed basis.

For myself, I probably wouldn't use Thunderbird for a mail merge. The functionality provided within Libre Office seems to work more smoothly.
